DURHAM – Duke senior offensive lineman
Graham Barton has been named to the preseason watch list for the Outland Trophy, an honor presented to the standout interior lineman of the year by the
Football Writers Association of America.

Barton returns for his third season as Duke's starting left tackle and was tabbed a preseason All-America selection by
Athlon Sports (2nd team),
Phil Steele's College Football Preview (2nd team) and
Walter Camp (Honorable Mention).

In 31 career games (30 starts), Barton has amassed 2,160 snaps. During the 2022 campaign, the Brentwood, Tenn., native was selected an honorable mention All-American by
Phil Steele Publications and a first team All-ACC honoree. Barton anchored an offensive line unit that ranked first in the ACC in sacks allowed (17) and tackles for loss allowed (51).

The recipient of the program's Offensive Lineman of the Year Award, Barton started all 13 games at left tackle a year ago, helping the offense accumulate 2,394 rushing and 3,010 passing yards. Led by Barton, the offensive line created paths for four Blue Devils to rush for 400-plus yards, a first in program history.

The 6-5, 314-pound lineman held a
Pro Football Focus grade of 88.2 at the conclusion of the 2022 season, which ranked fifth nationally among offensive tackles. He was the only Power 5 tackle to earn 85.0 grades as both a pass blocker and a run blocker.

The Outland Trophy is the third-oldest major college football award. Created in 1946 when Dr. John Outland presented the FWAA with a financial contribution to initiate the award, the Outland Trophy has been given to the best interior lineman in college football ever since. Dr. Outland, an All-American at the University of Pennsylvania in the 1890's, eventually took up practice in Kansas City, Mo. An avid outdoorsman, Dr. Outland believed linemen did not get the credit they deserved and wanted an award to recognize them.

The winner of the Outland Trophy is chosen from three finalists who are a part of the annual FWAA All-America Team. The FWAA All-America committee, after voting input from the entire membership, selects a 26-man first team and eventually the three Outland finalists. Committee members, then by individual ballot, select the winner.

There are 31 offensive tackles on this year's list with 24 defensive tackles and 24 guards to go with 12 centers.
