DURHAM – Duke track and field sophomore
Amina Maatoug added a couple more accolades to her incredible first season as a Blue Devil, turning in a pair of sensational performances this past weekend at the European U23 Championships that saw her collect bronze in the 5000m race as well as shatter the Duke program record in the 1500m.
Maatoug opened the four-day meet with a bang with a strong showing in the women's 5000m en route to snagging the bronze medal, clocking a time of 15:50.83 to finish third among the field. After qualifying for the 1500m final with a solid race in the first round, the Leiden, Netherlands product saved her best outing for last – this one coming via a record-breaking performance.
Behind a blistering time of 4:11.88, Maatoug finished seventh in the 1500m to pick up her second top-10 placement of the weekend, cementing herself atop the program charts in the process. Her time smashed the previous 14-year-old school record set by Molly Lehman in 2009.
