DURHAM – Duke men's lacrosse graduate student
Wilson Stephenson has been named to the 2023 College Sports Communicators Academic At-Large All-America Third Team as announced by CSC Wednesday.
Earning his bachelor's degree in 2022, Stephenson recently collected his Master's of Engineering degree in financial technology from Duke and finished his career with a 3.90 grade point average. He is the first Blue Devil to earn Academic All-America honors since Deemer Class received third-team recognition in 2016.
Stephenson had a memorable final season for the Blue Devils, earning USILA All-America honorable mention. A two-time team captain, he helped anchor Duke's close defense as the Blue Devils ranked second in the high-powered ACC with a 10.89 goals against average. He led the Blue Devils with 29 caused turnovers, ranking third in Duke single-season history.
Outstanding off the ground as well, Stephenson was second among non-faceoff specialists with 62 ground balls. He garnered the USA Lacrosse Magazine National Player of the Week award following his performance against Penn All-American Sam Handley. In the win over the Quakers, Stephenson picked up six ground balls, caused four turnovers and scored a goal, while holding Handley to just one goal and two assists. His efforts also earned him a spot on the Tewaaraton Award Watch List.
A four-time member ACC Academic Honor Roll, the Greenwich, Conn., native has one of the best comeback stories in collegiate sports. After suffering a devastating injury to his leg in the NCAA quarterfinals as a freshman, Stephenson vowed to return to the field for the Blue Devils. He spent the entire 2020 calendar year rehabbing and made his return official against Mercer, Feb. 13, 2021 - a span of 637 days between games.
Stephenson went on to start nine of his 12 games in 2021 before becoming a full-time starter on close defense in 2022 and 2023. He finished his career with 64 games played, including 40 starting assignments, collected 136 ground balls and 60 caused turnovers. He ranks fourth in Duke history in career caused turnovers.
