DURHAM – One of the most adventurous Duke women's soccer alumna you can find is Libby Jandl. The 2013 Blue Devil graduate, has seen the world through her travels and is now documenting her adventures through her website and social media channels. GoDuke.com caught up with Jandl recently to learn more about what she has been up to.
GoDuke.com: You have started a travel website/social media account. Please tell us more about this and how you came about starting it?
Libby Jandl: For the last 10 years, I've lived in NYC working in Finance. As we all know, office life can be very sedentary, and to make up for it I have adopted a love for travel! I seek new adventures every opportunity I get, which can include anything from epic hikes along mountain trails and stunning views in nature, to exploring cities and towns in far-away places. I love active trips, and also go on annual ski and hiking trips to the West coast. Over the years, I always naturally wrote down my itineraries and journaled the places I had been, paths I had taken, and the food and drink I had tried. As time went on, friends and family would often ask for recommendations when they would travel, and I thought, why not post it all up on a website and share travel recommendations for anyone who'd like some fun ideas? And so
youonlylibbonce was born! I've put together a list of amazing places I've visited all over the world with photos, itineraries, recommendations. New experiences rejuvenate me and make me feel truly alive to the fullest, and I hope to be able to share that with others looking to broaden their horizons and enjoy all the incredible things that this world of ours has to offer!

GD: Have you always loved to travel?
LJ: My love for travel definitely developed as an adult. I'm the fourth kid in a big family of very fun and loving people. Growing up, my parents and siblings showed me some of the best that life has to offer, cultivated my adventurous spirit (and wine palate), and have shown me that hard works pays off and leads to so many wonderful opportunities to enjoy life. Athletics and academics have always been a central part of my life - aspects that I prioritized growing up over my love for traveling. My dad introduced me to soccer, golf, and basketball early on, and my firecracker of a mom signed me up for every sports team possible. You name it, I played it. This passion for sports has definitely shaped how I like to travel. I always plan active and outdoorsy trips, including the legendary Inca trail hike to Machu Picchu, hiking throughout the Swiss Alps, and exploring the West Coast mountains (hikes throughout Bryce, Zion, Page, Sedona, and the Grand Canyon).
GD: Do you have any upcoming trips planned?
LJ: I'm planning a two-week adventure this summer exploring the stunning coastlines of Italy and Greece. We are starting in the picturesque town of Positano, Italy, where we will soak in the Mediterranean sun while savoring delicious Italian cuisine. We're also planning on boat day trips to the nearby towns of Amalfi and Capri. After getting a taste of southern Italy, we will then head to the enchanting Greek islands of Santorini, Mykonos, and Naxos. We will spend our days on the beaches, exploring charming villages, and indulging in fresh seafood and traditional Greek dishes. We can't wait!

GD: What are some of your most memorable places you have been to so far?
LJ: I've visited over 30 countries and I try to go to at least one new spot each year. I enjoy skiing the mountains of Colorado and traveling the world to places like Machu Picchu in Peru, the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, and the beaches and jungles of Thailand. I've also been sky diving, scuba diving, white water rafting, tubing, and zip lining. Embodying the You Only Libb Once lifestyle as much as I can.
Queenstown, New Zealand really stands out in my memory and is one of the most incredible places I've ever been. It's known as the Adventure Capital of the World – which is right up my alley and fits into the YOLO motto. We did once in a lifetime bucket list activities every single day – including sky diving, bungee jumping, jet boating, and hiking up through the clouds. More on New Zealand: New Zealand (

GD: Do you remember the first trip you ever went that sparked your love of traveling?
LJ: My trip to Thailand really made me fall in love with traveling. There are so many things to see and do both in the cities and in nature. For excursions out of town, there are visits to gorgeous tropical beaches, boating & snorkeling excursions, hikes along incredible waterfalls ("sticky waterfalls"), and a really unique elephant excursion. In town, there are also many things to do: cooking classes, top-notch massages at very affordable prices, going to see intense Thai boxing matches, and exploring the markets. It was such a unique experience and really expanded my horizons to new parts of the world.
GD: When you look back on your experience/time at Duke. What comes to mind?
LJ: The 2011 season really stands out to me! We paved our way to the National Championship game in the NCAA College Cup that season, and broke all sorts of records along the way. The success of our talented roster came not only from exceptional skill, but also from the team's tight bond and winning mindset that we worked very hard to develop in the off-season. The values that our team cultivated during that time have stayed with me in life and continue to guide my everyday actions.
GD: What does head coach Robbie Church meant to you and the Blue Devil soccer program?
LJ: Robbie Church forever changed my life, giving me the opportunity of a lifetime and taking a chance on me. He is truly the greatest coach of all time – as he strikes the rare balance of having a winning mentality, while also always being an incredible human. We have the most unbelievable Duke soccer program and
Robbie Church had a huge impact on our team culture. A big thank you to
Robbie Church for recruiting incredible players, coaches, and trainers … and creating a forever kind of family!
GD: Are you able to still keep in touch with many of your Duke teammates?
LJ: Yes definitely! The DWS alumni crew in NYC has a group text chat where we organize group events and keep each other updated on life. Within my class, I get to hang out with Nicole Lipp and Callie Simpkins on a regular basis since they're also in the New York area, and I have been skiing with Maddy Haller almost every year since she lives in Colorado. There have been so many fun DWS weddings that have also been like DWS reunions - Kelly McCann's wedding in Santa Monica, Cassie Pecht's wedding in Tampa, and Laura Weinberg's wedding in Miami. Lastly, I'm also on the DWS alumni committee and have been responsible for planning many of the past DWS alumni weekends at Duke. It's been so great having been reunited with everyone on campus almost every year!
