DURHAM – The Duke men's lacrosse team is headed to the NCAA Tournament as the No. 1 seed as announced on the NCAA Men's Lacrosse Selection Show on ESPNU Sunday night. The Blue Devils will host the winner between Delaware and Marist, Sunday, May 14 at 5 p.m.
The Blue Hens and the Red Foxes face off Wednesday in Newark in the play-in game. Delaware is the champion of the Colonial Athletic Association, while Marist garnered the automatic bid after capturing the MAAC crown.
Tickets for the game are $11 for adults and $6 for students and senior citizens. Fans are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance of the game on GoDuke.com.
Duke is making its 25th appearance in the NCAA Tournament and garnered the No. 1 seed for the fourth time in program history. The Blue Devils were the top seed in 2007, 2008 and 2014 and are 9-2 when sitting at the top of the 16-team bracket.
The Blue Devils head into NCAA postseason action sporting a 13-2 overall record and the nation's best RPI. Duke is 40-21 all-time in NCAA Tournament play and has advanced to Championship Weekend 13 times and owns three NCAA titles. Under head coach
John Danowski, Duke is 31-11 in the NCAA Tournament.
Headlining the Duke offense is the talented attack trio of
Brennan O'Neill,
Dyson Williams and
Andrew McAdorey. O'Neill is one of the nation's premier attackman and has 44 goals and 36 assists for 80 points, while Williams and McAdorey have 55 and 53, respectively. The group accounts for 53 percent of Duke's points this season.
Graduate student
Garrett Leadmon is the leader on the first midfield line with a career-high 28 points, while rookie
Charles Balsamo and junior
Aidan Danenza both have contributed 26. Senior
Owen Caputo paces the second midfield with 26 points.
Defensively, Duke is anchored by veterans
Kenny Brower and
Wilson Stephenson. Stephenson leads the squad with 23 caused turnovers, while Brower draws the matchup against the opponent's top scorer. Brower has 14 caused turnovers and 29 ground balls. Stephenson's 23 forced turnovers are tied for seventh in
Duke single-season history.
Seniors
Tyler Carpenter and
Will Frisoli headline the long stick midfield unit and see time on the faceoff wings. Junior
Jake Naso has been dominant at the faceoff dot for the Blue Devils this season, winning 64 percent of his restarts. He recently eclipsed the 700-win mark, becoming the 32nd player in NCAA history to do so.
In goal,
William Helm has started all 15 games between the pipes. He sports a 10.71 goals against average and a .517 save percentage to rank 27th nationally.
The winner of Sunday's game advances to the quarterfinal round and will play the winner between Cornell and Michigan.
