The four returning lettermen were selected by their teammates. Monk returns to the leadership role after serving in the position last season, while Carter becomes Duke's first three-time team captain after also leading the Blue Devils in 2020 and 2021.
In 39 career games, including 26 starts, Carter has compiled 85 tackles, 21.5 tackles for loss, 11.0 sacks, seven caused fumbles, three fumble recoveries, 12 quarterback pressures and seven pass breakups. The Pickerington, Ohio, native was named a second team All-ACC section a year ago after finishing tied for first in the ACC and tied for third nationally in fumble recoveries and tied for fourth in the conference and tied for 13 nationally in forced fumbles.
Franklin, a redshirt senior defensive tackle, has played 37 career games with 13 starts. He has compiled 44 tackles, 5.0 tackles for loss, 3.0 sacks, five pass breakups, two fumble recoveries and two quarterback pressures. The Ridgely, Md., product logged a career-best five tackles against Georgia Tech in 2022 in addition to booking a season-best 1.0 tackles for loss against Northwestern and Virginia.
Leonard has completed 287-of-454 pass attempts (.632) for 3,348 yards with 21 touchdowns against seven interceptions and has rushed 171 times for 872 yards (5.09) with 15 touchdowns in 20 career games. The junior was tabbed an honorable mention All-ACC selection and the Military Bowl MVP during his first year as Duke's starter. The Fairhope, Ala., native set school single-season records for touchdowns responsible for with 33 and pass completion-to-interception radio (41.67), while also ranking tied for first in wins by a starting quarterbacks, second in rushing touchdowns by a quarterback, tied for third in rushing touchdowns, and fourth in rushing yards by quarterback. Monk, a four-year starter along the offensive line, has played 3,051 snaps throughout 46 career games. Last season the honorable mentioned All-ACC selection helped Duke register 31 rushing touchdowns, which set the program's single-season record. He anchored an offensive line unit that ranked first in the ACC in sacks allowed (17) and tackles for loss allowed (51).
Duke is set to kick off the 2023 season at home on Monday, Sept. 4 when it welcomes Clemson to Brooks Field at Wallace Wade Stadium.
