DURHAM – 'The All 22' podcast, an Inside Look at Duke Football, is back for the spring season and the fifth episode is now available via iTunes and Google Play.
The podcast, hosted by football radio crew members David Shumate, Dave Harding and John Roth, features guests including current and former players and members of the Blue Devil coaching staff as well as local and national football reporters to discuss all things Duke football.
With the Blue Devils back on the practice field, Mike Elko's group looks to build on a nine-win season during his first year in Durham. Ahead of the Blue & White Game on Saturday, the crew had a chance to catch up with Vice President and Director of Athletics Nina King to look back at a very impressive start to the Elko Era in Durham.
Below is a preview of the episode.
DS: First of all, thank you for coming back on the podcast. It's been a little bit since we've had you on, but man, what a year. I want to go back to the future before we start looking ahead and kind of picking apart last season. Let's go back, I guess, 16 months and you're sitting in conference rooms and talking to coaches all across the country, thinking about who the next right leader for the Blue Devils would be. I would imagine you always envisioned success when you're having those conversations, but could you have ever envisioned what this has turned out to be, particularly from a culture standpoint?
NK: So, wow, 16 months seems like just yesterday, and forever ago, all at the same time! It was all kind of a blur with how fast we had to move, and ultimately did move, to make our blockbuster hire. It was interesting, going into it I had a lot of conversations with a lot of constituents – from student-athletes, to former players, campus colleagues, and athletics colleagues. I spoke with a lot of people to just understand how to paint the picture of who is the next Duke head football coach. We were thinking about things like what qualities does that man have, and what experiences and everything that goes into making sure it is the right fit. So, after a lot of conversations, and again quickly, because we have to do this quickly, we had an idea and set out to talk to folks that fit that portrait of the next Duke head football coach. It was a lot of fun, now 16 months later, I can say fun! But to talk to a variety of folks, and really once Coach [Mike] Elko and I had the first initial zoom – because we were still zooming lots those day, we had that first initial Zoom and I was just so excited by his vision, who he is as a person and really what he could come to Duke and do, and wow, did we see it last year.
