DURHAM – 'The All 22' podcast, an Inside Look at Duke Football, is back for the spring season and the third episode is now available via iTunes and Google Play.
The podcast, hosted by football radio crew members David Shumate, Dave Harding and John Roth, features guests including current and former players and members of the Blue Devil coaching staff as well as local and national football reporters to discuss all things Duke football.
With the Blue Devils back on the practice field, Mike Elko's group looks to build on a nine-win season during his first year in Durham. In this episode the group will spotlight Duke's defense and feature a conversation with Tyler Santucci, who spent time with Elko at Texas A&M, Notre Dame and Wake Forest, before taking over as the Blue Devils' defensive coordinator this offseason.
Below is a preview of the episode.
DS: Let's start with just the obvious question - there's a relationship with you and Coach Elko that goes back many years. I would imagine that's a piece of the puzzle that brought you here to Duke, but from your perspective, what brought you here?
TS: Yeah, I think Coach Elko is a piece of it and then I think when you think about Duke and what the university represents, what these kids represent, they pick Duke for a reason. People, not only the student-athletes, but the people that go to Duke are high achievers and they want what's best in life. They want to work for what's best in life and I think that matches a lot of things that I want to be about. That I strive to be about as a man. So along with Coach Elko, I think a lot of those things kind of brought me here.
DS: Before we talk about this team in particular, coaches have different philosophies. Mike Elko brought the G.R.I.N.D. to Durham as a core philosophy. If you could describe for Duke fans that are kind of getting to know you a little bit, what your philosophy is, and how you like to see your guys play when they're out there.
TS: Number one, we'll always represent that 'grind' mentality that Coach Elko sets for the team. But as a defense, I think we want to kind of categorize ourselves under four things - effort, accountability, toughness, and togetherness. We can watch that on film, we can verify that on film, and we can see all of those things. There's proof of them, playing together - 11 as one. There's proof of effort, accountability, there's proof of toughness. Those are things that we can show them, 'hey, when we do it like this and all four of these things are accounted for, it looks pretty good.' So, that's what we're striving for.
