DURHAM – Coming off spring break, the 10th-ranked Duke women's tennis team returned to action on Wednesday afternoon inside the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center and collected a 7-0 win over Northwestern to close the non-conference portion of their 2023 slate.
The Blue Devils improved to 16-2 overall and won their 22nd-straight home match to tie for the fifth-longest streak in school history. Northwestern fell to 5-9 on the year.
How It Happened
• Northwestern came out in doubles with the hot hand taking leads on all three courts early.
• After falling behind, 3-1, on court three, Duke's tandem of
Iuliia Bryzgalova and
Emma Jackson battled back to take the match, 6-3, by winning five straight games.
• On court two, the Blue Devil duo of
Karolina Berankova and
Ellie Coleman faced Maria Shusharina and Sydney Pratt. The match featured six deuce points with Duke dropping four of the six in a very tight match. Northwestern went ahead, 5-1, but Berankova and Coleman won back-to-back deuce points to extend the match, before falling, 6-3.
• The doubles point came down to court one with Duke's 32nd-ranked
Chloe Beck and
Cameron Morra versus Briana Crowley and Christina Hand. After dropping the first game, Beck and Morra won two in a row to take a 2-1 lead. The first three games went to a deuce point to decide who won. Crowley and Hand responded by winning three in a row to go ahead, 4-2. Trailing 4-3, Beck and Morra won three straight deuce points to take a 5-4 lead and then closed the match with a 6-4 victory to give the Blue Devils the doubles point. Duke won five of the six deuce points in the match.
• In singles, Duke won the first set on five of the six courts.
• No. 70 ranked Morra, on court two, was very impressive dropping only two games en route to defeating Maria Shusharina, 6-0, 6-2, to give the Blue Devils a 2-0 lead.
• Shortly after Morra's win, Duke's 31st-ranked Jackson registered a 6-3, 6-0 win on court three against 109th-ranked Hand and the Blue Devils led, 3-0.
• After dropping the first two games and trailing 3-1 to open her match with Leong, No. 2 ranked Beck won five consecutive games to take the first set, 6-3. Beck then clinched the match for Duke with a 6-0 sweep in the second set on court one.
• The final match of the day was on court four with Duke's Coleman versus Crowley. Crowley built a 5-0 lead in the first set, but Coleman would not quit winning five straight games to even the score, 5-5. Crowley would eventually win the first set, 7-5. Coleman opened the second set with a 3-1 lead, but Crowley came back to take a 5-3 lead. Coleman battled back once again and evened the match, 5-5, but would fall behind again, 5-6. After evening the score, 6-6, Coleman won the tiebreaker, 7-3, to send the match to a third set tiebreaker. In the third set tiebreaker, Coleman jumped ahead, 7-1, and never trailed, but Crowley came back to even the match, 9-9. In the end, Coleman won 12-10 to take the match, 7-6 (12-10).

Quotes
"It took us a little bit to kind of get going with our doubles. It looked like we hadn't played a match in 10 days to be honest with you. We were able to turn it around with some changes. Just being able to make little changes was a good thing for us." -- Duke head coach
Jamie Ashworth
"I mean, I love playing with Chloe. It's been the best time so far and I know we're really excited for what's to come. But, you know, it was a little bit of a slow start. I didn't play best. I put that on me. But we're really happy to get the win. Coming back from spring break. We had such a great trip. We got to spend so much time together, which I think only helps and I think we saw our team chemistry really come together today." -- Duke graduate student
Cameron Morra
"This is my favorite time of the year coming up. Coming back from spring break - getting some rest after school and finals. But this is the time of year that matters the most. I'm just trying to make sure I do everything I can to help the team. It's such a special group of people and I think we're all really excited for what's next." -- Duke graduate student
