DURHAM – Junior guard
Jeremy Roach logged his second-straight, and fourth overall, 20-point game of the season on Saturday night as Duke defeated North Carolina, 63-57, on Saturday night inside Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Blue Devils (17-6, 8-4) had three players score in double-figures and
Dereck Lively II set career-highs with 14 rebounds and eight blocks.
Kyle Filipowski and
Tyrese Proctor joined Roach in double-figures with 14 and 11 points, respectively.
Duke out-rebounded North Carolina, 46-40, and finished with a 33-26 advantage on the defensive glass. The 33 defensive rebounds by Duke was one shy of its season high (34, Iowa) and the third straight game that the Blue Devils have had 30+ defensive rebounds.
Lively's eight blocks were the most by any Duke player in a Duke-Carolina game, and the second-most by a Duke freshman in any game, trailing nine by Mike Gminski at Davidson on Jan. 5, 1977. Filipowski's 14 points extended his double-figure scoring streak to nine consecutive games and the freshman has eclipsed 10 points in 21 of Duke's 23 games this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Jeremy Roach connected on Duke's first basket of the evening following two early baskets by North Carolina. A pull-up three-pointer by the junior guard and a layup by Kyle Filipowski evened the score at 7-7 at the first media timeout of the game.
- The visitors maintained a slight edge through the next stretch of action, with North Carolina's largest lead, 19-12, coming with just under 10 minutes remaining in the first half. A three-point-play by Jacob Grandison narrowed the gap to 19-17 and capped off a quick five-point scoring burst by the Blue Devils.
- Duke reclaimed the lead, 25-24, after Roach laid it in while getting fouled with 3:51 on the clock. The junior made the free throw out of the break to reach double-digits for the fourth time in the last five games and 12th time this season.
- The Blue Devils remained in the lead at halftime, 33-32, after the two teams traded baskets for the final three minutes of the opening frame. Tyrese Proctor scored five straight for Duke to finish with nine first-half points.
- Filipowski scored the first points of the second half, his 10th point of the evening. The freshman has scored at least 10 points in nine straight games and in 21 of Duke's 23 games this year. Proctor joined his classmate in double-figures on the Blue Devils' next possession with a layup high off the glass.
- The Duke defense held North Carolina to a stretch of 1-of-7 from the field, helping the Blue Devils open up their largest lead of the game, 44-38, after a Mark Mitchell and-one.
- Having already set a new career-high with seven blocks and securing eight rebounds, Dereck Lively II scored his first points of the night with a put-back dunk. His 31st dunk of the season put Duke back into the lead, 51-50, with less than nine minutes to play.
- Another put-back dunk by Lively pushed the Blue Devils back into the lead, 59-57, with 90 seconds remaining. With the score the same, Duke called timeout with 35.3 seconds. Out of the timeout, Roach converted on a driving layup to give the Blue Devils a two-possession lead, 61-57. The junior scored his 20th point of the night at the free throw line with less than 10 seconds to play to finish off the victory.

QUOTES
- "I thought it was a really physical game. They're really good, obviously. You know, Dereck Lively just changed the game. His rim protection; I'm so proud. I've talked to you guys about this before, you know, the journey. For Dereck, getting hurt in the preseason, continuing to just battle through and find his rhythm. To do what he did today, one, I'm not surprised because he's worked incredibly hard. Him and Amile Jefferson, every morning, they have a routine they do now. But two, I'm just proud of him for that. Jeremy [Roach], the whole game, was in control. Big buckets at key times. Tyrese [Proctor], his offense but also his defense. And then Flip [Kyle Filipowski] might have had one of the big time plays of getting the loose ball to get us an extra possession down the stretch there." -- head coach Jon Scheyer
- "D-Live [Dereck Lively II] worked his butt off all night. He had a big-time matchup and an experienced guy in Armando [Bacot], great rebounder. He just did his job. He was physical the whole night. His main goal coming into this was just get [Bacot] off the boards by boxing him out and letting us get all the rebounds for him. All the rebounds that me and [Jeremy] Roach got and all the guys, it's his work. We just got all the cleanup. And I think he had eight blocks or something at the end of the game. It's just crazy. He had a great game. I think his confidence was there the whole time, but he's starting to get into a rhythm now." -- Duke guard Tyrese Proctor on the effort by Dereck Lively II
