BLACKSBURG, Va. –
Celeste Taylor scored 12 points to lead a balanced scoring effort, but the No. 9 Duke women's basketball team dropped a 61-45 decision at No. 11 Virginia Tech Thursday night at Cassell Coliseum.
In addition to Taylor, the Blue Devils (22-4, 12-3) also received solid contributions from
Vanessa de Jesus, Ashlon Jackson and
Jordyn Oliver, who combined for all 23 points off the bench. de Jesus and Jackson tallied eight points apiece, with de Jesus adding three rebounds and three steals to her statline, while Oliver added seven points.
Georgia Amoore and Elizabeth Kitley each scored 20 points to lead Virginia Tech (21-4, 11-4) in the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Taylor paced Duke in the opening half with eight points, scoring six in the first and adding another bucket in the second quarter.
- Jackson cashed in a three off a second-chance opportunity, Oliver banked in a floater off the glass and Reigan Richardson added a split trip at the charity stripe to round out the first-half scoring effort for Duke.
- Duke put up a dozen points in the third, led by de Jesus and Taylor with four apiece.
- Shayeann Day-Wilson and Kennedy Brown comprised the other four points, with Day-Wilson scoring in transition on a scoop layup following a euro step and Brown finishing with a reverse on the right side.
- The Blue Devils continued to fight until the very end, outscoring the Hokies 19-10 in the final quarter.
- Jackson and Oliver led the way in the fourth quarter for Duke as each scored five points, followed by de Jesus with four. Elizabeth Balogun and Day-Wilson rounded out the fourth period scoring with three and two points, respectively.
GAME NOTES
- Celeste Taylor reached double figures for the 18th time this season, finishing the game with 12 points.
- Duke outscored the Hokies 23-3 off the bench and 26-22 in the paint.
- The Blue Devils also registered 10 steals and 10 blocks.
- Taya Corosdale grabbed a team-high six rebounds and posted a career-high five blocks, while Mia Heide tallied a season best three rejections.
- Duke forced four shot clock violations during the game, pushing its season total to 32.
