Blue Devils Raise Over 3K in Fall for Birdies for Babies Program

DURHAM – With the fall Duke men's and women's golf seasons concluded, the programs raised $3,221.50 from the Birdies for Babies program, which will go to support the kids at the Duke Children's Neonatal and Pediatric Intensive Care Units.
The two teams closed the fall season in impressive fashion registering a total of 129 birdies and three eagles in their last tournaments. Now in the seventh year of the Birdies for Babies program, the Blue Devils have raised $111,025.
If you are interested in supporting Duke's partnership with Duke Children's, you can pledge for each birdie made during the season or make a one-time donation. Pledges start at $0.50 and higher increments are welcome. If the Blue Devils register an eagle (counts as two birdies), albatross (three birdies) or hole-in-one (four birdies), they will count as stated.
The creation of the Birdies for Babies program was spearheaded by former Duke women's golf standout Virginia Elena Carta. A native of Udine, Italy, Carta was a four-time All-ACC selection and the 2016 NCAA Individual Champion. The 2016 WGCA All-America and Honda Award winner turned in an NCAA-record 16-under-par ledger of 272 as a rookie to register her first collegiate victory. She became one of only four Blue Devils to win both a NCAA Individual and team NCAA title.
To finish the fall, the women's team won the Landfall Tradition on Sunday, Oct. 29. The Blue Devils fired a school-record tying 17-under, 271, in the final round to win the event for the first time in school history. All six Duke golfers shot under-par on the final day, led by an 8-under, 64, by senior Anne Chen.
The men's program secured another top-five finish at the Cal Poly Invitational as the Blue Devils posted a 9-under, 855. Duke registered top-five finishes in all five events it competed in during the fall, including a win at the Rod Myers Invitational.
The women's team will be off until Feb. 18-20 when the Blue Devils travel to Melbourne, Fla., to compete in the Moon Golf Invitational. The men's program will next play in The Prestige Feb. 19-21 in La Quinta, Calif.
Duke Children's is a 180-bed inpatient hospital within Duke University Hospital. The central outpatient clinic, the McGovern-Davison Children's Health Center, is a 66,000 square-foot facility that is adjacent to the hospital, and combines medical and surgical specialty services in one colorful, child-focused location.
