DURHAM – Five Blue Devils scored in double-figures and Duke shot 51 percent overall to down Wingate, 106-33, in exhibition women's basketball action Saturday afternoon.
The Blue Devils were led by freshman
Jadyn Donovan (20 points, nine rebounds) and junior
Reigan Richardson (17 points). Graduate student
Camilla Emsbo added 15 points and five boards off the bench,
Kennedy Brown added 12 points, seven rebounds and six assists while rookie
Oluchi Okananwa chipped in a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Duke jumped out to an early 9-0 lead. Donovan dropped in the game's first four points, scoring on a drop step off a nice feed from Brown before cutting down the lane for a finger roll via another feed from Brown.
- Richardson cashed in a three from the left wing and Ashlon Jackson followed with a driving layup to put the Blue Devils up by nine and force a Wingate timeout.
- The Bulldogs broke their scoring drought at the 6:26 mark on free throws from Emily Hege. Duke closed the quarter on a 21-5 run and held a 30-7 lead after one.
- Duke kept the pressure on in the second period, outscoring Wingate, 23-8, over the 10-minute period – a dozen of those coming from Richardson via a 5-of-5 clip from the field. At the break, the home team held a 55-15 lead.
- The Blue Devils kept their foot on the gas in the third as they netted 25 of the period's 33 points. Seven different Duke players scored during the frame led by Brown (6) and freshman Delaney Thomas (5).
- Duke put the finishing touches on the victory with another 25-plus point quarter.
GAME NOTES
- Duke finished the game with five in double digits – Donovan (20), Richardson (17), Emsbo (15), Brown (12) and Okananwa (10)
- The freshman four of Jadyn Donovan, Oluchi Okananwa, Delaney Thomas and Jordan Wood combined for 43 points and 31 rebounds – which accounted for 41 percent and 50 percent, respectively, of the Blue Devils' point and rebound production on Saturday
- Duke shot 68.8 percent from the field in the first period and went on to finish the game at a 51.3 clip (40-of-78) from the field.
- Duke scored 35 points off 23 Wingate turnovers and got 42 points from its bench.
