DURHAM – The Voice of the Blue Devils, David Shumate, sat down with redshirt senior wide receiver Jalon Calhounfor a brief question and answer session.
DS: Let's talk about what you guys have done this year so far, it's so impressive how you guys have controlled so many games you've been in. How have you been able to do it particularly on the offensive side? JC: Just staying consistent, staying level-headed. You know there's going to be good and bad plays, but on the bad plays you just have to play the next down and stay level-headed, that 'greenhouse effect'.
DS: You mentioned the 'greenhouse effect' and level-headed, how much does that play into how experienced this team is. You're a big part of it, you guys have been through the ups and downs. It feels like you guys aren't rattled whether it's going extremely well or maybe it's not going so well. Is that because you guys have been through so much? JC: The game ebbs and flows, there's going to be ups and downs. You know everything that goes up might not go our way, so we've just got to keep playing hard and staying mentally locked in. Like you said, the 'greenhouse effect', just with the older guys coming in and just us staying focused on all that we've wanted to get done. We can accomplish that.
DS: Let's talk about your game individually. Everyone knows coming in you're at the top of the scouting report in terms of take away wide receivers and you still get open, how do you do it? JC: That's my job. That's my job to get open. It's hard, but I know to help my quarterbacks out I have to get open.
DS: You guys had a bunch of home games to start the year now you have a bunch of road games. Last week you were in Tallahassee, now you're in Louisville. Do you love going on the road when the crowd and everybody seems like they're against you? JC: As much as I love home games, going on the road and beating someone else in their own house, there's no other feeling like it. Especially the great atmospheres, I'm looking forward to each one of them.
DS: You've had this opportunity a couple of different times, I'll let you go on this, when you make a big play you have a long touchdown, to think about the game that you guys had against NC State a couple weeks ago, be honest with me -- when you're running toward the videoboard and you know you're behind everybody, do you peek at all to see where you're at? JC: Alright, I definitely peek at the board for sure. I try not too because I like to get my catapult numbers up and my speed to try to hit like 21. When I know somebody's behind me, I can just go a little bit faster, so that's why I kind of peek.
DS: Did you hit 21 on that run against NC State? JC: No, I hit 20.
