DURHAM – With Opening Night in the NBA set for Tuesday night, the Duke men's basketball program has 24 members of The Brotherhood on opening-day rosters.
The Blue Devils have players at a total of 18 different franchises, including a trio with the Dallas Mavericks (
Kyrie Irving,
Seth Curry and
Dereck Lively II) and duos in Atlanta (
AJ Griffin and
Jalen Johnson), Orlando (
Paolo Banchero and
Wendell Carter Jr.), Brooklyn (
Harry Giles and
Dariq Whitehead) and New Orleans (
Brandon Ingram and
Zion Williamson).
Banchero, Duke's fifth all-time overall No. 1 pick, is a year removed from his NBA Rookie of the Year campaign that saw him average 20.0 points, 6.9 rebounds, 3.7 assists and shoot .427 from the field for the Magic. Brothers
Tre and
Tyus Jones, playing for San Antonio and Washington, respectively, are scheduled to play each other twice during the regular season.
Duke's two first-round picks from the 2022-23 squad, Lively and Whitehead, are set to make their NBA debuts this season. Lively averaged 20.4 minutes during the preseason while scoring 6.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and blocking 1.8 shots per game. Whitehead, the third-youngest player in the NBA this season, is recovered from his off-season foot surgery and has progressed to live-action rehab.
Duke's two dozen NBA players also join a long list of former players, coaches, managers and Duke graduates that serve on NBA coaching staffs or in front office roles for 26 of league's 30 teams, and for the league office. That includes former Hall of Fame head coach
