DURHAM – The Duke men's basketball team has been tapped at No. 2 in the Associated Press preseason poll released Monday, marking the 16th consecutive season in which the Blue Devils have been ranked inside the top 10 in the initial poll.
The Blue Devils also extend the nation's longest streak of being ranked in the top 10 at any point in the season to 28 consecutive years. The next closest program is Kansas, which has been ranked inside the top 10 at some point in 18 straight seasons.
The preseason ranking marks the 17th time the Blue Devils have debuted in the top-three in the AP preseason poll and first time since consecutive preseason No. 1 rankings in 2016-17 and 2017-18.
Entering the second year under head coach
Jon Scheyer, Duke returns four starters and 80 percent of its scoring from last year's team that went 27-9 overall, 14-6 in the ACC and claimed the program's league-record 22nd ACC title. After going 16-0 at home last season – the 19th perfect home campaign in program history – Duke's 16-game home winning streak entering the season is the sixth longest active nationally and the second longest by a power conference team (UCLA, 25).
The Blue Devils tip off the 2023-24 season with Countdown to Craziness on Friday, Oct. 20 at 7 p.m., and welcome UNC Pembroke to Cameron Indoor for an exhibition on Wednesday, Nov. 1 at 7 p.m. Duke opens the regular season against Dartmouth on Monday, Nov. 6 at 9 p.m., before clashing with top-25 teams in back-to-back games against No. 12 Arizona at home on Friday, Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. and versus No. 4 Michigan State in the Champions Classic on Tuesday, Nov. 14 at 7 p.m.
