RALEIGH – NC State's Terquavion Smith and Jarkel Joiner combined for 45 points as NC State defeated No. 16 Duke, 84-60, at PNC Arena on Wednesday night. The Blue Devils (11-4, 2-2) finished with three players in double figures, as
Kyle Filipowski led the team with 14 points and
Dariq Whitehead and
Ryan Young joined him with 12 and 11 respectively. Filipowski led the efforts on the glass for Duke, grabbing eight rebounds.
Filipowski returned to scoring in double-digits after a two-game hiatus and has scored 10 or more points in 13 of Duke's 15 games so far this season. Whitehead scored in double figures for the third consecutive game and connected on a career-high four three-pointers. The freshman's previous best had been two, in Duke's previous game against Florida State.
Young continued his efficiency from the field in ACC play against the Wolfpack. The graduate went 4-for-4 from the field against NC State, moving the graduate to 18-of-19, and a perfect 11-for-11, in shot attemps in Duke's last two ACC contests.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After the hosts took a 15-point lead to start the contest, Mark Mitchell got the Blue Devils on the board with a dunk.
- Dariq Whitehead connected on back-to-back shots from beyond the arc, first knocking down a contested jumper from the corner and then sending in a step-back shot from deep.
- A layup by Kyle Filipowski got the freshman into the score sheet and drew Duke within 12, 26-14, forcing a timeout by the Wolfpack.
- Duke's second half started with Ryan Young and Kyle Filipowski combining to score the Blue Devils' first 11 points of the frame.
- Neither team managed to find offensive separation in a back and forth second half, and Duke trailed, 78-52, at the final media timeout.

QUOTES
- "It's hard to have a great perspective right now when you're in the moment and you're disappointed, to say the least. You know it's a long year. I knew this when I took the job that there's gonna be some moments like this where people can doubt you, they can doubt us as a team, sometimes the best way to learn is to experience it. For this group in particular, to experience this, to experience playing on the road, while you wish you were 2-0 on the road or 4-0 in conference, but that's not how it works. For us it's all about how you learn from it and that's how I'm gonna approach it." -- head coach Jon Scheyer
- "We know the road games are tough. Everybody is going to have their best shot, their best game with us. We got to be even more locked in on the road. Learn from this and go to [Boston College] on Saturday." -- junior guard Jeremy Roach
