DURHAM – After opening the 2023 campaign with three wins, the fifth-ranked Duke women's tennis team returns to action this weekend as the Blue Devils host the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Kickoff Weekend at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center in Durham, N.C.
Top-seeded Duke (3-0) will open action Saturday, Jan. 28 against No. 4 seed VCU (0-2) at 10 a.m., followed by No. 2 seed SMU (2-1) versus No. 3 seed Wisconsin (2-1) at 2 p.m. Both losing teams will then face each other on Sunday, Jan. 29 at 10 a.m., followed by the winning teams at 2 p.m. Free parking will be available in the blue zone lot for all fans.
The winners of the championship match at 2 p.m., will advance to the National Team Indoors Feb. 10-13 in Seattle, Wash.

ITA Kickoff Weekend
Duke hosts VCU, SMU and Wisconsin for the ITA Kickoff Jan. 28-29. All four teams will be looking to advance to the National Team Indoors Feb. 10-13 in Seattle, Wash.
The Blue Devils are hoping to advance to the National Team Indoors for the 30th time in school history. Duke failed to advance in both 2022 and 2021 so the Blue Devils are looking to snap that streak in 2023. In ITA Kickoff Weekend matches in Durham, N.C., Duke owns a 26-2 ledger. The Blue Devils won the National Team Indoors in 2003 and 2014.
The Series with VCU
The Blue Devils and the Rams will face off for the eighth time in series history, with Duke leading the series 6-1 overall. This match will be contested at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center between these teams for the fifth consecutive outing. The Blue Devils are on a five-match winning streak against the Rams, taking the last match, 7-0, the year prior, on Feb. 17, 2021.
Duke Versus the Atlantic 10 Conference
The Blue Devils are 16-1 overall versus the Atlantic 10 Conference. Duke is on a current 13-match win streak versus A-10 opponents.
Scouting VCU
VCU currently owns an 0-2 record to open the season with losses coming against Temple (2-4) and Maryland (0-4). The Rams are the four-time defending Atlantic 10 Champions. VCU returns three critical pieces from last year's A-10 Championship in senior Gabriela Davidescu, an All-Atlantic 10 Second Team selection, and sophomores Anja Draskovic and Yelizaveta Karlova.
The Rams' doubles team of Yelizaveta Karlova and Victoria Matasova are currently ranked No. 30 in the ITA doubles listing.
The Series with SMU
The Blue Devils and Mustangs will resume their series for the first time since 2008, and will meet for the seventh time in school history. The series is tied 3-3 overall, with the last matchup coming almost 14 years ago. In the last meeting, Duke featured a 7-0 sweep at Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center. Duke is currently on a 3-match winning streak versus SMU, dating back to 1990.
Duke Versus the American Athletic Conference
The Blue Devils are 18-3 all-time versus the American Athletic Conference. Duke is on a current 10-match winning streak versus American Athletic Opponents.
Scouting SMU
SMU currently features a 2-1 record and is coming off a 5-2 loss to No. 1 Texas on Saturday. The Mustangs return the core of their squad that produced a 15-9 record a season ago.
Hadley Doyle of SMU is ranked No. 113 in the ITA singles rankings, while the team of Taylor Johnson and Jackie Nylander are No. 32 and the duo of Winslow Huth and Lana Mavor are No. 38 in doubles.
The Series with Wisconsin
Duke and Wisconsin will face each other for the ninth time in series history, and for the first time since 2013. In the last meeting, the Blue Devils swept the Badgers, 6-0. Duke leads the series, 7-1, and is currently on a seven-match winning streak against Wisconsin, dating back to 1987.
Duke Versus the Big Ten Conference
The Blue Devils are 126-23 all-time versus the Big Ten Conference. Duke is on a current five-match winning streak versus Big Ten opponents.
Scouting Wisconsin
Wisconsin enters the weekend with a 2-1 ledger with wins over Marquette (6-1) and Samford (7-0), while falling to No. 2 North Carolina (6-1). The Badgers are coming off finishing 17-9 a year ago to go along with an 8-3 league mark.
Maria Sholokhova is currently ranked No. 59 in the ITA singles rankings, while Ava Markham is No. 82.

Duke is currently ranked No. 5 in the ITA coaches' poll, which is sponsored by Tennis-Point. With the top-10 ranking, the Blue Devils have been listed in the top 10 in seven straight years under the direction of head coach
Jamie Ashworth. In his 27th season at the helm, Ashworth has guided Duke to a total of 20 top-10 preseason rankings since 2001.

Cameron Morra currently owns a 96-39 career singles record and is four wins away from reaching the 100-win mark. Senior
Chloe Beck is only 14 wins away from reaching 100 wins as well, while featuring an 86-24 ledger. Beck also owns a 51-8 dual match record.
Playing at Home
The Blue Devils have featured an impressive home court advantage when playing in the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center as Duke owns an 88-3 ledger over the last 15 years. Duke has collected a 46-1 record over the last eight seasons with the lone loss coming to Oklahoma in 2022. Head coach

Duke owns a 14-match winning streak at home dating back to last season. The winning streak is tied for the ninth-longest in school history. The record is 54, which took place in 2017-21.
Experience Returns
Duke is coming off making its 11th appearance in the NCAA Semifinals and claiming the ninth ACC Championship under the direction of head coach
Jamie Ashworth. The Blue Devils notched a 23-4 overall ledger and return All-America selections
Chloe Beck and
Georgia Drummy. Other returning letterwinners include
Karolina Berankova,
Ellie Coleman and
Emma Jackson.
Ashworth also brought in three highly-ranked graduate transfers with the addition of
Iuliia Bryzgalova,
Cameron Morra and
Brianna Shvets. All three have played No. 1 singles at one point in their careers. Bryzgalova arrives from Penn where she totaled a 23-7 ledger a year ago. Morra was a five-time All-American at North Carolina with an 87-33 singles mark. Shvets collected a 59-26 record in singles at Princeton.
