No. 24 Duke begins a crucial ACC stretch Wednesday by welcoming Pitt to Durham.
On ACC Network, Wes Durham and Dan Bonner call the action. David Shumate and John Roth have the radio call on the Blue Devils Sports Network from LEARFIELD.
The Blue Devils play the three teams they trail in the standings over the next three games with Pitt (4-1), at Clemson (5-0) Saturday and home vs. Miami (4-1) the following Saturday.
Duke is 8-0 at Cameron Indoor Stadium this season where the team allows just 56.0 points per game and wins by an average margin of 24.3 points.
The series versus Pitt favors Duke, 14-8, including 6-2 at Cameron Indoor.
Wednesday's game matches up head coaches Jon Scheyer and Jeff Capel, who each played at Duke and were later assistant coaches on Mike Krzyzewski's staff together. The pair are two of 10 former Coach K Duke players or assistants now Division-I head coaches.
Duke leads the ACC in rebound margin (+8.6) and offensive rebounds (13.0) and ranks second in scoring defense (62.5) and total rebounds (39.1) -- top 50 nationally in each category.
Duke has out-rebounded 12 of its first 16 opponents and is 11-1 this season when holding an advantage on the glass. Duke is 9-1 when leading in offensive rebounding.
Duke has held 14 of 16 opponents to below their season scoring average -- six to its then-season low for points, including Iowa and Xavier.
The deep and balanced Blue Devils have seen seven different players lead the team in scoring over the last 10 games, including a historic 20-point effort by graduate Ryan Young vs. FSU, a career-high 17 by Jaylen Blakes at Wake and a career-high 18 by Dariq Whitehead at BC.
Young became the first Duke player all-time to record a 20-point double-double while not missing a shot, going 7-of-7 from the field and 6-of-6 at the free throw line.Â
Young is shooting .739 from the field overall and .833 (20-of-23) in ACC play.
Four-time ACC Rookie of the Week Kyle Filipowski has scored in double figures 14 times in 16 games. The freshman leads the team in scoring (13.8) and rebounds (8.6).
Filipowski and freshman Mark Mitchell were clutch late in Duke's 65-64 win at BC, as Mitchell's chase down block with 38 seconds left kept Duke's deficit to just one, while Filipowski had an offensive rebound and hit the go-ahead free throws with 16 seconds left.
On This Date: January 11
Duke is 27-7 all-time when playing on January 11.
The Blue Devils last played on this date in 2020 -- a 90-59 win over Wake Forest at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
In ACC play, Duke is 15-4 on this date.
About Pittsburgh
The Panthers are 11-5 overall and 4-1 in the ACC and had a five-game winning streak snapped Saturday vs. Clemson, 75-74, with Jamarius Burton scoring a game-high 28 for Pitt.
Wednesday's game matches up two teams coming off one-point decisions.
Pitt has four players averaging in double figures, led by Blake Hinson's 16.8 points and 6.9 rebounds.
Burton averages 16.6 points and shoots at a .555 clip from the field and .448 from three-point range (13-of-29).
Fifth-year head coach Jeff Capel is a former Duke player and assistant coach, spending seven seasons on Mike Krzyzewski's staff (2011-18), including his final four seasons as associate head coach.
A four-year starter for the Blue Devils from 1993-97, Capel was a two-time team captain. He was part of 83 wins and helped the program to 1994 NCAA title game.
Duke won the teams' lone meeting last season at Pitt, 86-56, behind 17 points from Trevor Keels.
Scheyer, Capel Part of Coach K's Expansive Coaching Tree
Wednesday's game matches up head coaches Jon Scheyer and Jeff Capel, who each played at Duke and were later assistant coaches on Mike Krzyzewski's staff.
Scheyer and Capel were together on Coach K's staff for five years (2013-2018) before Capel was named Pitt's head coach in March 2018. Â Duke won the 2015 NCAA title, two ACC crowns (2017, 2019) and compiled a .789 winning percentage in that five-year span.
In total, 10 of Coach K's former players or staff are Division I head coaches: Tommy Amaker (Harvard), Kenneth Blakeney (Howard), Mike Brey (Notre Dame), Capel (Pittsburgh), Chris Collins (Northwestern), Johnny Dawkins (Central Florida), Bobby Hurley (Arizona State), Nate James (Austin Peay), Greg Paulus (Niagara) and Scheyer (Duke).
Mike Schrage, who was previously the head coach at Elon, was hired by Scheyer this season as special assistant to the head coach. Schrage was a Duke staffer under Coach K.
Scheyer's staff also includes former Blue Devil captains Chris Carrwell and Amile Jefferson.
Coach K's influence extends to the pro game as well, with a long list of former players, staff and managers that are connected to the NBA.
That list includes Grant Hill as part-owner of the Atlanta Hawks, Elton Brand as general manager of the Philadelphia 76ers, Trajan Langdon as general manager of the New Orleans Pelicans and Shane Battier as vice president of analytics and development for the Miami Heat.
In total, more than 25 of Coach K's former players or assistants are currently either coaching or working in front office roles across professional and college basketball.
Blue Devils Allowing 62.5 Points -- Second in ACC, 36th Nationally in Scoring Defense; Second in ACC in Three-Point Defense
Duke is second in the ACC and 36th nationally in scoring defense, yielding just 62.5 points per game. Twelve of the first 16 opponents have been held to less than 70 points, while seven have failed to score more than 60.Â
Duke has held 14 of the 16 opponents to below their season scoring average -- six scored their then-season low for points, including holding Iowa to a then-season-low 62 and Xavier to 64 (20 points below its average).
Duke's strong defensive numbers come against a schedule rated 28th-toughest versus opponent offenses (per KenPom).
Eight opponents this season have failed to top 30 percent from behind the arc, as Duke ranks second in the ACC and 28th nationally in three-point defense (.291).
Freshmen Step Up Late in Boston College Win
Without junior starting guard Jeremy Roach (toe), Duke leaned on its freshmen to help pull out a 65-64 win at Boston College on Saturday.
A pair of rookies -- Filipowski and classmate Mark Mitchell -- made the winning plays late, as Duke rallied from a point down in the game's final 28 seconds to win in the final seconds.
Filipowski finished with 15 points, nine rebounds and three blocks to match his career high while Mitchell scored 14 points with six rebounds and a career-high three blocks.Â
The pair combined were 11-of-12 at the free throw line as Duke was 17-of-19 as a team from the line.
Filipowski's jumper with 1:42 left gave Duke a 63-59 lead, and following a three-pointer from BC that cut the lead to one, Flip came up with a crucial steal on the Eagles' ensuing possession to preserve Duke's lead.
After BC seized its first lead of the game with 28 seconds left, 64-63, Filipowski grabbed an offensive rebound, was fouled and canned what proved to be game-winning free throws with 16 seconds left for a 65-64 lead.
Mitchell nailed a pair of free throws with 2:20 left that gave the Blue Devils a 61-57 lead and his chase-down block of Jaeden Zackery with 38 seconds allowed Duke to maintain its 63-62 lead.
The game was the 155th one-point game in program history (84-71). Duke had not won a one-point game on the road since beating North Carolina, 74-73 on Feb. 17, 2016.
The Young and the Accurate
Young is 20-of-24 (.833) from the field in ACC play -- would lead the ACC by a wide margin (Louisville's Mike James leads the ACC at .591) but falls five field goals of short of qualifying.
The Stewartsville, N.J.-native had a streak of 14 consecutive made field goals snapped at BC -- had made 13 straight entering the game.
He is 30-of-35 (.857) at the free throw line this season and had a streak of 19 consecutive made free throws snapped at NC State.
Not just an efficient scorer, he ranks fourth in the ACC (58th nationally) in offensive rebounds (3.0) and is 16th in offensive rebound percentage (16.0).
His 103 rebounds this season are 28 shy of his total from last year at Northwestern.
Bounce-Back Ability
Duke is 26-3 following a loss since the 2016-17 season (not including the 2020-21 COVID season), not dropping consecutive games since 2019-20.
Over the last 25 seasons, Duke has lost by 20+ points in the regular season just six times, and is undefeated in the game to follow -- including Saturday's win at Boston College.
Duke's Three-Point Streak
Duke has connected on at least one three-pointer in 1,169 straight games, the second-longest streak nationally.
It has been more than 30 years since Duke was held without a three-point field goal -- Dec. 30, 1989, versus Hawai'i.
