DURHAM – Duke women's soccer standouts
Michelle Cooper and
Ruthie Jones have been selected preseason First Team All-Americans by CollegeSoccerNews.
The Blue Devil duo were two of 11 first team selections on the list that was released over the weekend.
Cooper, the 2021 TopDrawerSoccer National and ACC Freshman of the Year, is coming off a season where she led Duke with 12 goals and 29 points, while tying for second on the team with five assists. Her 12 goals set a Blue Devil freshman record. She became the first Duke player to score six goals over her first six career matches and went on to be a semifinalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy. Cooper, who is from Clarkston, Mich., made her 2022 Duke debut on Sunday against UNC Greensboro and tallied an assist on the game-winning goal as the Blue Devils defeated the Spartans, 3-1.
A product of Charlotte, N.C., Jones enters her third season as the starting goalkeeper, after registering a stellar junior campaign where she was an All-ACC First Team selection. She recorded 46 saves with a .793 save percentage, while allowing just 12 goals for an ACC-best 0.59 goals against average. Jones has collected 20 shutouts over four seasons, which ranks fifth on Duke's all-time charts. She opened the season with a clean sheet on the road at East Carolina and has only allowed one goal in 180 minutes so far this season.
No. 2 Duke will next travel to Knoxville, Tenn., to face 11th-ranked Tennessee at 7 p.m., at Regal Soccer Stadium. The match will be aired live on the SEC Network.
