DURHAM – The second-ranked Duke women's soccer team closed exhibition action on Friday evening at Koskinen Stadium with a 2-1 victory over 12th-ranked South Carolina in Durham, N.C.
The Blue Devils netted two second half goals by junior
Katie Groff and senior
Julia Hannon to propel Duke to the win.
Following 90 minutes of regulation soccer, the two teams played an additional 15 minutes, before closing action.
In the first half, Duke held a 5-2 shot advantage, but neither team could connect on a goal.
The Blue Devils were able to break the scoreless draw in the 66th minute, as freshman
Elle Piper sent a beautiful corner kick to the head of Groff. A product of Raleigh, N.C., Groff placed in a perfect header toward the far post for the tally.
With Duke leading 1-0 in the 75th minute, South Carolina's Taylor Jacobson fired a shot at the Blue Devil goal, but senior goalkeeper
Ruthie Jones made an excellent diving stop to her left. Eveleen Hahn of the Gamecocks was in the right place at the right time and was able to punch the rebound off the save into the top right corner of the net to even the score, 1-1.
Hannon, who hails from Massapequa, N.Y., made a great play against the Gamecock center back and took the ball from the defender with nothing but open space and the goalie ahead of her. The Blue Devil midfielder raced towards the South Carolina goal and was able to beat the keeper with a shot towards the far post to give Duke a 2-1 advantage.
"I thought the most important thing is we are getting better in training and I thought we had good practices leading up to this game," said Duke head coach
Robbie Church. "Now we grew in this game and we have to get ready for the real game, which is at East Carolina. It is the season opener on the road and at a state university. It is going to be a tough game, but we are looking forward to it."
Duke will next open the regular season on Thursday, Aug. 18 on the road at East Carolina in Greenville, N.C. The contest is slated for a 7 p.m., start.
