DURHAM – A pair of Duke women's soccer team members –
Michelle Cooper and Carina Lageyre – have been tabbed to represent the United States Under-20 Women's Youth National Team in the upcoming four-team Sud Ladies Cup in Aubagne, France from June 16-29.
The United States will face France on June 24, Mexico on June 26 and Netherlands on June 28. Aubagne is located 12 miles east of Marseille in the south of France.
A sophomore from Clarkston, Mich., Cooper is coming off scoring eight goals at the Concacaf Women's U-20 Championship to win the Golden Boot as the top scorer and Golden Ball as the best player. Cooper turned in a highly decorated freshman season at Duke in 2021 that saw her earn ACC Freshman of the Year and United Soccer Coaches first-team All-America honors, while being named a semifinalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy. She led Duke with 12 goals – the most by a rookie in program history – and 29 points, which ranked fifth overall in the ACC and fifth among all freshmen nationally. Cooper's 1.61 points per game were good for 23rd nationally and second among freshmen.
Lageyre, an incoming freshman for the Blue Devils, will join the U-20 squad after attending the training camp and two friendly matches against Costa Rica in May at the Elite Athlete Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif. A 5-7 midfielder from Cooper City, Fla., Lageyre is ranked as the No. 4 overall prospect and No. 1 midfielder in the class of 2022 by TopDrawerSoccer.com. She helped lead the U-20 Women's National Team to the UEFA Women's Development Tournament title in May of 2019 in Prague and has been a member of the U.S. Youth National Team pool since 2017.
These will be the final international matches for the U.S. U-20s before head coach Tracey Kevins selects a roster for the 2022 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup to be staged from Aug. 10-28 in Costa Rica.
All four teams participating in the Sud Ladies Cup have earned berths to Costa Rica and the tournament will serve as excellent World Cup preparation while including some intriguing matches for the U.S., which defeated Mexico, 2-0, in the Concacaf Women's U-20 Championship Final on March 12. The United States will face the Netherlands in the second match of group play at the World Cup on Aug. 14 in San Jose, Costa Rica.
