DURHAM – Duke's incoming men's tennis recruiting class was tabbed the No. 9 class in the nation, according to rankings released byÂ
TennisRecruiting.net on Monday.
Â
Pedro Rodenas and
Teddy Truwit make up the highly touted class that signed their National Letters of Intent. The duo will enroll in August of 2022 and join the Blue Devil squad for the 2022-23 season.
Â
Duke's 276 points were the most for any ACC school. Notre Dame (271), who came in at No. 10, was the only other conference school represented on the list. This year's class is the highest ranked since 2019 when the Blue Devils held the No. 2 recruiting class.
Â
To compile the rankings,Â
TennisRecruiting.net asked panelists to vote on the rankings. Each of the panelists submitted his/her take on the Top 25 recruiting classes. Schools received 25 points for each first-place vote, 24 points for each second-place vote, on down to 1 point for each 25th-place vote. The panelists were told not to consider incoming transfer students in their voting, and also did not consider incoming freshmen who are competing this spring.Â
Â
Rodenas, a Madrid, Spain, native, is one of the top international prospects for the 2022 class and holds a Universal Tennis Rating of 13.28 and an ATP ranking of No. 1235. Additionally, he is the top junior from Spain, having claimed the Spanish Junior National title in August 2021, and is currently the 23rd ranked adult male in his home country. Â
Â
This year, he has gone 16-5 in singles action and 9-4 in doubles play throughout the International Tennis Federation's Junior Circuit. Rodenas holds a career high ranking of No. 25 in the ITF Junior world rankings as well. His recent singles results include two Grade 1 semifinals, and a Grade A finals appearance in Offenbach, Germany, where he collected victories over the world's No. 9, 16, 18, and 26 ITF ranked junior players. The lefty also shows versatility on the court as he hoisted a Grade 1 Doubles title in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, this April. Â
Â
"Pedro brings an all-court, left-handed game style to Duke with a unique combination of power, creativity, and athleticism," Duke head coach
Ramsey Smith said. "I was immediately impressed by his passion for tennis, his love for competing, and his long-term vision for his game. Pedro has an opportunity as a freshman to make an immediate and positive impact on our program, and Maciek (Sykut) and I are looking forward to helping him grow on and off the court throughout his college career." Â
Â
Truwit, a Darien, Conn., product, is a blue-chip prospect with a current ranking of No. 20 in theÂ
TennisRecruiting.net national rankings. He is also listed as the No. 1 prospect from the state of Connecticut by the organization and currently owns a TennisRPI national ranking of 9 as well as a UTR rating of 12.45.Â
Â
Over the last year, Truwit has gone 26-12 in singles action, winning multiple national L3 titles. He claimed the boys singles title during his first ever appearance on the ITF tour at the ITF J4 in Atlanta after he defeated No. 3 seed Fnu Nidunjianzan of China, 7-5, 5-7, 6-4, garnering him an International Tennis Federation junior ranking of 754.Â
Â
"Maciek and I both regard Teddy as a natural fit in our program as he already embodies the qualities we look to develop within the team," Smith added about Truwit. "Teddy is a great competitor with a passion for the game, and he is just beginning to scratch the surface of his potential as a player. His coach, Patrick Hirscht, has done a tremendous job transitioning Teddy from a counterpunching style to an all-court aggressive game which is well suited to his size and physicality."
