DURHAM – For the second straight season, Duke women's golf standout
Erica Shepherd has been honored by the Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) as the junior was tabbed Honorable Mention All-America on Thursday afternoon by the organization.
A native of Greenwood, Ind., Shepherd turned in a solid third season with the Blue Devils as she compiled a team-best 72.24 stroke average to go along with four top-five and five top-20 finishes on the year. She closed the season with five straight rounds of even or under par, while notching a total of 12 on the year. Shepherd finished the season with a No. 26 national ranking in the Golfweek Individual ledger.
"I'm happy that Erica was selected as an All-American," said Duke head coach
Dan Brooks. "She's played great golf for Duke and deserves to be recognized as one of the nation's best players."
Shepherd collected second-place finishes a pair of times in the ACC Championship and Tar Heel Invitational. She carded rounds of 75, 68 and 69 for a 4-under, 212, at the ACC Championship. Shepherd was the only golfer in the field to notch back-to-back scores in the 60s in the event. In the Tar Heel Invitational, she posted rounds of 66, 70 and 70 for a career-low 10-under, 206. Shepherd also opened the season with a fourth-place ledger at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate with scores of 68, 72 and 70 for a 6-under, 210.
She went 2-0 in match play at the East Lake Cup to help send Duke into the championship match and was tied for 11th at the NCAA Franklin Regional with scores of 71, 72 and 71 for a 2-under, 214. Shepherd's 71.25 third round scoring averaged ranked eighth in Duke's season record charts.
A two-time All-ACC selection, Shepherd received WGCA Second Team All-America accolades a year ago. She will represent the United States for the second straight summer at the Arnold Palmer Cup July 1-3 in Vandoeuvres, Switzerland.
