DURHAM – Duke women's tennis earned the No. 3 overall seed in the NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championships and will host the first and second rounds, the NCAA revealed Monday evening.
The reigning ACC champions will welcome Furman, Old Dominion, and Quinnipiac in the opening two rounds at Ambler Tennis Stadium beginning Friday.
"First and foremost, it is an honor and privilege to be selected to the NCAA tournament and our team definitely understands that," said head coach
Jamie Ashworth. "There are 264 Women's Division I tennis programs and we know that we have to earn everything – nothing is given to us, and we have to be deserving of the opportunity. For the last six weeks our team has done just that - we earned the chance to play in May and earned the chance to be playing at home in front of some of the best fans in the country."
The first-round tilts will begin with Furman (21-6) taking on Old Dominion (20-6) at 1 p.m. on Friday. Duke (19-3) will then face off against Quinnipiac (13-8) at 4 p.m. The Blue Devils match with the Bobcats will be the first all-time meeting between the two sides. The two winners of Friday's matches will advance to Saturday's second round contest at 4 p.m. That winner will move on to the NCAA super regional round which is set for May 13th or 14th.
"This is not something that we take for granted, and we know we have to keep working hard to achieve all that we can," Ashworth added. "We are excited about what lies ahead and are looking forward to getting things started on Friday evening."
Each super regional site will feature two teams playing a single-elimination format. The super regional winners advance to the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex in Champaign, Ill., where the eight teams will compete for the national championship on May 20-22. The event will be hosted by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Duke returns to the NCAA Team Championships for the 32nd consecutive season and 33rd overall. The Blue Devils sport an all-time record of 75-31 (.708) when competing on the national stage. Last season, the Blue Devils advanced to the NCAA quarterfinal, before falling to national runner-up North Carolina, 4-1, in Orlando, Fla.
The Blue Devils have reached the NCAA's main event in each of Duke head coach
Jamie Ashworth's seasons with the program, amassing a record of 63-23 (.733) over that span. In 2009, Duke won the national championship with Ashworth at the helm.
