DURHAM – For the 27th time in the last 30 seasons, the Duke men's tennis team will compete at the NCAA Team Championship, the NCAA announced Monday.
Â
The Blue Devils, who come in as the No. 23 team nationally by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), will make their way to Knoxville, Tenn., for the first and second round play this weekend.
Â
Duke (16-8) will take on Memphis (16-7) on Friday at 10 a.m. in the opening round. Site hosts Tennessee (22-7) face Tennessee Tech (8-12) on Friday at 1 p.m. The winners of the two matches will face each other on Saturday at 1 p.m. The winner of that match will then advance to super regional competition on May 13th or 14th. Each super regional site will feature two teams playing a single-elimination format. The super regional winners advance to the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex in Champaign, Ill., where the eight final teams will compete for the national championship on May 19-22. The event will be hosted by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Â
Tickets to the event, which will be held at Tennessee's Barksdale Stadium, will be available to the general public beginning Tuesday at 8:30 a.m.
Â
The Blue Devils have played Memphis on one other occasion heading into Friday's match and it came on Jan. 24, 2015. Duke claimed a 4-0 victory in that outing in Durham. Of the other teams in the regional, Duke trails 17-11 in the all-time series with Tennessee and it would be the first all-time meeting with Tennessee Tech.
Â
Duke owns an all-time record of 47-28 (.626) when competing in the NCAA Championship. The Blue Devils' last NCAA appearance was last season when they fell to No. 33 South Florida, 4-2, in Gainesville, Fla. Duke has reached as far as the quarterfinals eight times (1993, 1994, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2012 and 2013).
Â
This year, the Blue Devils have been led by junior
Garrett Johns, who is ranked No. 51 nationally and holds a 12-6 mark on Duke's top court. The Atlanta, Ga., native went 6-4 in ACC singles play and has gone 7-3 against nationally ranked opponents. Four others have posted 10-plus wins on the season heading into the weekend. In doubles action, the sophomore tandem of
Faris Khan and
Niroop Vallabhaneni lead the team with a mark of 8-7. They are followed closely by Johns and
Sean Sculley with a record of 6-7.
Â
Singles and doubles selections for the 2022 NCAA Individual Championships will be announced Tuesday evening.
