DURHAM –Duke University will serve as the host for the 2022 ACC Field Hockey Championship and the 2023 ACC Rowing Championship the Atlantic Coast Conference announced Thursday morning. The ACC will hold 25 ACC Championship events over the course of the 2022-23 academic year.
Duke will host the field hockey championship at Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium Nov. 1-4, and will partner with North Carolina to host the 2023 ACC Rowing Championships at Lake Wheeler in Raleigh, N.C., May 12-13
The ACC currently sponsors 27 sports (14 women, 13 men), soon to be 28 (15 women, 13 men) with the addition of women's gymnastics in 2023-24. No Autonomy Five conference sponsors more than 28 sports and the league's 27 for 2022-23 is the second most. The soon-to-be 15 women's sports will be the most of any peer conference.
"The lineup for next year's ACC Championships is a terrific mix of on-campus and neutral sites and we are grateful to each venue for their partnership," said ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips, Ph.D. "We are extremely proud to provide a first-class championship experience to the nearly 10,000 student-athletes that compete in the ACC while also providing a terrific experience for our dedicated and loyal fans."
The 2022 ACC Field Hockey Championship will return to a newly renovated and upgraded Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium. The Blue Devils previously hosted the ACC Championship in 2014.
Earlier this spring, Duke announced enhancements to the home of Blue Devil field hockey squad with the addition of the Jim Sabiston Field House that will feature a new locker room and increased meeting spaces for the Blue Devils along with numerous other improvements.
The Williams Field playing surface also will be getting an upgrade as the newest state-of-the-art blue turf, Tokyo GT will be laid down. The new surface, which was first introduced in the Tokyo Olympics has countless benefits, including being more sustainable.
This premium playing surface is composed of 60% Sugar Cane, saves CO2, and uses less water. These hockey turfs are making a positive contribution to the environment and creating an entirely new category of hockey turf that AstroTurf likes to refer to as "Climate Positive Hockey".
Just down the road in Raleigh, Duke and North Carolina will join forces to bring the 2023 ACC Rowing Championship to the Triangle. It will be just the fourth time the rowing event has been held somewhere other than at Clemson's Lake Hartwell course and for the first time since 2009.
The Blue Devils have hosted the Lake Wheeler Invitational each of the past four seasons, including welcoming 16 teams to the 2022 event. Lake Wheeler Park covers 800 acres – 650 acres of lake and 150 acres of park – and was constructed in 1956 with the aid of the Army Corps of Engineers.
