Men's Tennis Adds Pedro Rodenas to Incoming Class

DURHAM – Duke men's tennis head coach Ramsey Smith announced Monday the signing of Pedro Rodenas to the class of 2022.Â
"Maciek and I are so happy to welcome Pedro into the Duke Tennis family this fall," Smith said. "Pedro is one of the highest ranked recruits in the world and we are thrilled he chose Duke to further develop his game and continue the upward trajectory of his tennis career through the college and ATP ranks."
The Madrid, Spain, native is one of the top international prospects for the 2022 class and holds a Universal Tennis Rating of 13.28 and an ATP ranking of No. 1235. Additionally, he is the top junior from Spain, having claimed the Spanish Junior National title in August 2021, and is currently the 23rd ranked adult male in his home country. Â
"Pedro brings an all-court, left-handed game style to Duke with a unique combination of power, creativity, and athleticism," Smith added. "I was immediately impressed by his passion for tennis, his love for competing, and his long-term vision for his game. Pedro has an opportunity as a freshman to make an immediate and positive impact on our program, and Maciek and I are looking forward to helping him grow on and off the court throughout his college career." This year, Rodenas has gone 16-5 in singles action and 9-4 in doubles play throughout the International Tennis Federation's Junior Circuit. He holds a career high ranking of No. 25 in the ITF Junior world rankings as well. His recent singles results include two Grade 1 semifinals, and a Grade A finals appearance in Offenbach, Germany, where he collected victories over the world's No. 9, 16, 18, and 26 ITF ranked junior players. The lefty also shows versatility on the court as he hoisted a Grade 1 Doubles title in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, this April. Â
"I chose Duke because I felt that it was the best fit to continue growing as a tennis player, while at the same time being able to get a degree at one of the best universities in the United States", Rodenas said. "I think both Ramsey and Maciek contributed a lot to my decision, as I am sure that they will be able to make my tennis game reach an even higher level. My dream is to continue growing in the professional rankings, and I know Duke will help me achieve that. I am looking forward to being part of the team." Â
Rodenas' maturity at his age is reflected by his results at ATP pro circuit events. While reaching the semifinals of the 15k Futures event in Manacor, Spain, earlier this year, he beat Benjamin Hassan and Imanol Lopez, who held a No. 310 and 550 ATP ranking, respectively. Â
This summer, Rodenas is scheduled to compete in the main draw of the prestigious Roland-Garros and Wimbledon Junior Championships. Â
