FRANKLIN, Tenn. – With 18 holes remaining at the NCAA Franklin Regional, the Duke women's golf team sits in third place with a 2-over-par, 578, after turning in another solid day on Tuesday at the 6,450-yard, Par-72 Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin, Tenn.
The host team, Vanderbilt, turned in a 7-under-par, 281, to jump into the lead with a 7-under, 569, while Alabama (574), Duke (578), Wake Forest (579), Texas A&M (584) and UTSA (587) round out the top six teams. The top four teams following Wednesday's action will advance to the NCAA Championship in Scottsdale, Ariz., May 20-25.
"I am just real proud of what the team has done over these two days," said Duke head coach
Dan Brooks. "They keep learning the golf course. The wind blew again today. It was less gusty, but the wind was blowing. They just seem to be learning it a little better. We didn't score quite as well today, but the golf was probably a little better today. I mentioned to them that I think they are poised. They are in a place where I have seen so much good golf, we might get a win if we just keep doing what we are doing."
The Blue Devils feature four golfers in the top 20 led by sophomore
Anne Chen with a 3-under, 141, which is tied for sixth. Junior
Erica Shepherd is tied for ninth with a 143, while sophomore
Phoebe Brinker and freshman
Rylie Heflin are tied for 20th with a 147.
Jennie Park of Texas A&M leads the field with a 9-under, 135.
Chen collected her team-best 13th round of even or under par on Tuesday as she rolled in five birdies and shot 2-under, 70. After three pars to open her day, she two-putted for birdie on No. 4. After a par and bogey on the next two holes, Chen went on to make the turn at even-par, 36. She quickly got into the red numbers as she hit her 50-degree wedge on No. 10 from 107 yards to eight feet for birdie and then rolled in a 25-foot birdie putt on No. 12 to get to 2-under.
"I think it went well today," said Chen. "It was a little bit of a struggle coming down our back nine, because I was bogeying/birding, but I just had to keep on going and keep focusing knowing that every single hole was a birdie chance."
A product of Sugar Land, Texas, Chen sandwiched her fourth birdie of the day on No. 14 with two bogeys, before closing with a 1-under-par ledger over her final three holes. She hit a half 60-degree wedge from 61 yards on No. 17 to four feet and sank the birdie. Chen had a key up-and-down par on No. 18 to finish at 2-under for the day. She hit all 14 fairways, 14 greens and had 31 putts on the day.
Shepherd featured another solid day with an even-par, 72, which marked her 11th round of even or under par this season. She stuck her approach on the first hole to two feet for birdie and then birdied the par-5 fourth hole to get to 2-under-par early. Shepherd, who hails from Greenwood, Ind., struggled during the next four holes with three bogeys, but closed the front with a 15-foot birdie to make the turn at even-par, 36.
On the back, Shepherd bogeyed No. 10, but played her final eight holes at 1-under-par, with seven pars and a 2-foot birdie on No. 13. She hit all seven fairways on the back nine and finished with 13 fairways hit in the round along with 12 greens and 30 putts.
Brinker, a native of Wilmington, Del., turned in a solid day on the course with a 74 to go along with four birdies. After parring the first hole, she had a triple-bogey on No. 2, but responded strong with back-to-back birdies on No. 3 and No. 4. Brinker hit her 8-iron from 145 yards on the 156-yard, par-3 third hole to six feet and sank the birdie. She then reached green in two on No. 4 and two-putted for birdie. Brinker had four pars and a double-bogey to close the front nine.
On the back, Brinker parred the first three holes, which included an up-and-down on No. 12, before collecting two straight birdies on No. 13 and No. 14. She rolled in a 15-footer for birdie on No. 13 and then reached the green in two on the par-5 14th and 2-putted for birdie on No. 14. Brinker was 1-over to close the final four holes to finish with a 74.
Heflin, who is from Avondale, Pa., parred the first hole and then featured a great up-and-down on No. 2 as she hit her 54-degree wedge to two feet for par. After a bogey on No. 3, she hit her iron from 215 yards to 12 feet and drained the birdie to get back to even. She then parred four straight holes, before bogeying No. 9 to make the turn with a 1-over, 37. Heflin closed the afternoon with seven pars and two bogeys to finish with a 75. She hit 11 greens, 10 fairways and had 30 putts.
After playing the front nine at 6-over, 42, junior
Megan Furtney had an excellent back nine with seven consecutive pars and two birdies to close her day. On the par-4 17th, she used her 60-degree wedge from 55 yards and stuck it to two feet. She then drained a 25-foot birdie on No. 18 to close the day with a 76. Furtney, a product of St. Charles, Ill., 1-putted her final four holes, including an up-and-down for par on No. 15.
"I am so proud of this team," said Chen. "We have had a little struggle these past two semesters, but it is coming together nicely. Everyone is practicing really hard and it is all just working really well when we need to."
The Blue Devils lead the field with 38 birdies over 36 holes. Duke will close action on Wednesday beginning at 10:06 a.m. (ET), along with Vanderbilt and Alabama.
