Duke Opens Action at Wolfpack Match Play Invitational

RALEIGH – The Duke women's golf team opened action at the Wolfpack Match Play Invitational on Sunday at the Lonnie Pool Golf Course in Raleigh, N.C.
The Blue Devils dropped a 4-1 decision to North Carolina in the opening match, before falling, 4-1, to Florida State in the afternoon.
In the morning, the Tar Heels jumped out to quick leads in three of the five matches and never looked back. Junior Erica Shepherd trailed after the first hole to Nicole Adam, but won the second and took her first lead on hole No. 13. Shepherd, a native of Greenwood, Ind., built a 5UP lead through nine holes and closed with a 6&5 victory.
Freshman Rylie Heflin faced Natalia Aseguinolaza and the Duke rookie won hole No. 10 to take a 1UP lead, but dropped the next hole tie the match. Heflin, who is from Avondale, Pa., never trailed until her 13th hole, but ended up dropping a 2&1 decision.
Megan Furtney would go on to drop a 3&2 ledger to Krista Junkkari, while Anne Chen fell, 2&1, to Kayla Smith and Phoebe Brinker lost a 2&1 match to Crista Izuzquiza.
In the afternoon, the Blue Devils faced Florida State and Duke once again got off to a slow start in three of the five matches.
Furtney, a product of St. Charles, Ill., won the first three holes against Elle Johnson and would lead by as many as 4UP on the front nine. Johnson won the No. 10 and No. 11 holes to cut Furtney's lead to 1UP and even tied up the match with two holes left. Furtney won the par-3 eighth to go back ahead 1UP and held on to win 1UP.
After holding a lead in 14 of the first 17 holes, Brinker ended up dropping the final two holes to Amelia Williams to fall, 1UP, in her match. Heflin fell, 5&4, to Alice Hodge, while Chen dropped a 7&6 decision to Cecilie Finne-Ipsen and Shepherd fell, 6&5, to Charlotte Heath.
Duke will conclude action on Monday morning as the Blue Devils face Notre Dame at 8 a.m., in its final match of the event.
