RALEIGH, N.C. – The 14th-ranked Duke women's tennis team won a thriller Friday evening as the Blue Devils rallied from two down en route to completing a come-from-behind victory over second-ranked NC State at J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center.
No. 7 junior
Chloe Beck, senior
Margaryta Bilokin and freshman
Ellie Coleman each scored three-set decisions to help Duke complete its furious rally, beginning with Beck's win in flight two.
Taking on 31st-ranked Abigail Rencheli, Beck rebounded from one set down and breezed to a 6-2 decision in set two setting up a decisive third. The final set was a back-and-forth affair that ended up tied 6-6 after 12 games – needing a tiebreaker to decide the final point. Beck stayed composed and went on to take the tiebreaker, 7-6 (3), claiming the match and cutting the deficit down to one.
Coleman tied the match at number five after defeating Sophie Abrams. Similarly, to the matchup on court two, Coleman and Abrams split the first two sets with the Duke rookie taking set one (6-4) while Abrams grabbed the second set 6-3. Needing a tiebreaker to decide the winner of the final set, Coleman came through in the clutch and grinded a 7-4 decision for the win.
Bilokin clinched the match for the Blue Devils with a triumph over Nell Miller in three sets at the fourth spot. The senior captured the opening set 6-4 but fell in a tight second set by a score of 5-7. After dropping the first two games in the final set, Bilokin issued a great response and rattled off four of the next six to collect the point and lock down the result for Duke.
NC State grabbed the early 1-0 lead after scoring a pair of doubles wins to open the match. The Wolfpack beat Duke's 75th-ranked duo of Bilokin and graduate student
Eliza Omirou at number three (6-2), then secured the doubles point with a victory on court one (6-3) over the No. 80 doubles pairing of Drummy and sophomore
Karolina Berankova.
When doubles action was halted, Beck and Coleman trailed NC State's Amelia Rajecki and Abigail Rencheli, 3-4.
NC State extended its lead to a pair after picking up a singles win on court six, but the 20th-ranked Drummy got the Blue Devils on the board as she dispatched No. 14 Jaeda Daniel 6-4, 6-1 in flight one. The win was Drummy's third over a ranked opponent in dual match play this season.
The Wolfpack pushed its lead back to a pair following a win in the third slot. That would be the last match to go the way of the home team, as the Blue Devils reeled off three-straight victories to rally for the victory.
