ATLANTA – Duke men's basketball signee Dariq Whitehead has been awarded the 2022 Jersey Mike's Naismith High School Trophy for Boys Player of the Year, as announced by the Atlanta Tipoff Club.
A senior at Montverde Academy in Monteverde, Fla., Whitehead becomes the fourth all-time Duke signee to receive the Naismith Trophy, following Shane Battier (1997), Austin Rivers (2011) and RJ Barrett (2018). The Blue Devils have had more Naismith Trophy winners than any program, surpassing Georgia Tech and UCLA (three each). Whitehead is also the fourth Montverde Academy product to win the award, the most by any high school nationally.
The 6-foot-6 small forward averaged 17.6 points, 3.6 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game this season, helping lead Montverde to a 20-4 overall record. Whitehead is currently rated as the No. 4 prospect in the ESPN 100 class of 2022 rankings and was named to the McDonald's All-American roster in January.
The Jersey Mike's Naismith High School Trophy for Player of the Year was first presented in 1987, and the winners are selected by a group of basketball journalists from around the country who form the Naismith Awards national high school voting academy. The selections were based on outstanding performances during the 2021-22 high school basketball season.
