DURHAM – Freshman
Emma Jackson delivered for the Blue Devils in the clutch, scoring a three-set decision to help the No. 9 Duke women's tennis team complete its come-from-behind, 4-3 win over 12th-ranked Virginia Friday evening at Ambler Tennis Stadium.
"I'm happy for Emma [Jackson]," said head coach
Jamie Ashworth. "In that situation, a freshman, never been in that situation before where the whole match comes down to her – it was great for her, [she] was great in that moment."
Taking on Amber O'Dell in flight four, Jackson seized six of the seven games to take the first set of her matchup, 6-1. O'Dell issued a response and took the second set, but Jackson's confidence never wavered. With her teammates and coaches behind her, the 53rd-ranked freshman breezed to a 6-1 decision in the deciding third set to win her match and clinch the win for her team.
"Honestly, I was just really excited, I was really wanting to win for the team," said Jackson. "It was my first time being in that position and I just wanted to capitalize. I saw all my teammates and coaches on the sideline, and I just wanted to win for them and myself – I'm really happy that I pulled through.
Virginia (10-2, 2-1 ACC) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after taking two of the three doubles matches in the top two flights. After the visitors took the matchup on court one, freshman
Ellie Coleman and graduate student
Eliza Omirou collected a doubles win on court three as they defeated Natasha Subhash/Sara Ziodato 6-4. The 32nd ranked tandem of junior
Chloe Beck and senior
Margaryta Bilokin were locked in a tight battle with Sofia Munera and O'Dell, but the Cavaliers were able to hold them off as the Duke duo fell, 6-4.
Beck got the Blue Devils (7-1, 3-0 ACC) on the board and tied the match at one apiece with a win in flight two as the 11th-ranked junior dispatched Subhash 6-0, 6-1.
Virginia extended its lead by a pair following wins on court six and court one, but it would be Duke who had the final say, as the Blue Devils reeled off three-straight victories to rally for the victory.
Senior
Kelly Chen kick-started the Duke rally and pulled the Blue Devils with 3-2 behind a 6-3, 6-3 win on court three. Just like Bilokin, Chen jumped on her opposition early, winning four of the first five games before going on to claim the first set, 6-3. The second set against Sofia Munera was back-and-forth from the start as the opponents split the first six games. Chen went on to grab the final three games to win the match.
Bilokin deadlocked the match at 3-3 after defeating Ziodato in straight sets. Like her classmate, the senior jumped out to a 4-1 advantage on the way to dominating the opening set, 6-1. Bilokin captured set two via a hard-fought, 6-3 battle, securing Duke's third singles win of the evening and shifting the momentum in favor of the Blue Devils.
"I liked our resolve a lot," said Ashworth. "I liked our focus. They didn't let the doubles bother them. We came out and got off to a tremendous start in singles. I think across the board three or four courts were up 3-0, and we just kind of rolled from there. I love that everyone was fully invested in that match – emotionally, physically, mentally – and I thought we did a good job coming back."
