TALLAHASEE, Fla. – The 10th-ranked Duke women's tennis team suffered its first loss in eight matches as the Blue Devils dropped a 4-2 decision Friday afternoon at Florida State.
The two teams split doubles results on courts one and two as the Seminoles' claimed the win (6-2) at number one while Duke's tandem of
Chloe Beck and
Ellie Coleman secured a 6-1 victory in the second spot. The Blue Devils held an early advantage on court three but came up just short, as Florida State rallied for the win to lock up the doubles point.
Duke (11-2, 6-1 ACC) scored the next two points as the action shifted to singles, beginning with graduate student
Eliza Omirou's win by retirement in the sixth spot before play commenced on any of the courts. Beck gave the Blue Devils their first, and only lead of the match shortly after – the 20th ranked junior took the opening set 6-2, then earned the win when Lesedi Jacobs was forced to retire in set two.
Florida State went on to clinch the match with consecutive victories in flights four, three and one. When play was halted, Coleman had just edged Olympe Lancelot 7-6(4) in the first set on court five.
