Ruthie Jones and
Sophie Jones each played two matches for the U.S. Under-23 Women's Youth National Team at the Thorns Preseason Tournament, held March 5-11 in Portland, Ore.
The U-23 squad faced the NWSL's Chicago Red Stars, Portland Thorns and OL Reign, collecting an 0-1-2 record in the three-game exhibition tournament at Providence Park.
Ruthie Jones started the opening match against the Red Stars, recording three saves in a clean-sheet effort. The All-ACC First Team goalkeeper came up huge in the 58th minute, diving to her left to deflect a shot from inside the penalty area. Jones followed up with another diving stop on the ensuing corner kick to preserve the 0-0 draw
After resting for the U.S.'s second game against Portland, Jones started the finale against OL Reign, making two saves in a 1-1 draw. For the week, Jones registered five stops and just one goal allowed in 180 minutes of play.
"Playing with the U-23 WYNT was a tremendous experience," said Jones. "It was an amazing opportunity to play with and learn from players from different programs across the country while competing against NWSL teams. It was also awesome to have Sophie there with me and we're both super grateful for the opportunity."
Sophie Jones started the first two matches at midfield for the U.S. before resting against OL Reign. Jones added to her wealth of experience playing for the Youth National Team, as the Menlo Park, Calif., native also competed at the 2018 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup.

Sophie Jones said. "It was amazing to be able to practice with such talented players from all across the country and learn from such experienced and insightful coaches. On top of that, it was awesome to be able to challenge ourselves against some of the best players and teams in the NWSL. I was so lucky to have Ruthie there with me and I can't express how thankful I am for the opportunity to take part in the tournament."
