DURHAM – After signing a one-year contact with the National Women Soccer League's North Carolina Courage on Friday, former Duke standout
Tess Boade made her professional debut on Saturday night, helping the Courage open the Challenge Cup with a 2-0 win over NJ/NY Gotham FC.
The Duke co-captain this past season was subbed on in the 62nd minute on Saturday. Boade, who was originally selected in the fourth round of the 2021 NWSL Draft by Gotham FC, is one of six former Blue Devils on a current NWSL roster.
A native of Highlands Ranch, Colo., Boade wrapped up her Duke career ranked fourth in program history in matches played (93) and eighth in game-winning goals (10). She provided clutch scoring throughout her graduate campaign this fall, highlighted by game-winners against No. 1 Florida State and No. 2 North Carolina. The first-team All-ACC and second-team All-Atlantic Region selection set career highs in goals (8), assists (5) and points (21) while helping lead Duke to a No. 1-seed in the NCAA Tournament and an appearance in the quarterfinal round.
Boade and the Courage play their second match of the Challenge Cup on Saturday, March 26, against the Orlando Pride. She will meet her former classmate
Caitlin Cosme, who inked a two-year deal with the Pride in January.
