Blue Devils Overpower Syracuse En Route to 7-0 Win

DURHAM – No. 5 Duke women's tennis won its seventh consecutive match as the Blue Devils breezed to a 7-0 win over Syracuse (7-6, 1-5 ACC) on Sunday afternoon at Ambler Tennis Stadium.

Duke (10-1, 6-0 ACC) quickly dispatched the Orange in doubles to claim the opening point. The tandem of senior Margaryta Bilokin and graduate student Eliza Omirou controlled their match against Syracuse's Shiori Ito and Sofya Treshcheva from start to finish and collected a 6-0 win in the top slot. That, combined with senior Kelly Chen and sophomore Karolina Berankova's win by default on court three, gave the Blue Devils the early 1-0 lead.

Court two's match between freshman Ellie Coleman and junior Chloe Beck and the Orange's Ines Fonte and Viktoriya Kanapatskaya went unfinished with the Duke duo leading 5-3.

Berankova's win by default in the sixth slot gave the Blue Devils a 2-0 advantage before singles play commenced on the other five courts.

Bilokin and Chen added two more points to Duke's total after each commanded their respective matches. Bilokin beat Treshcheva handily (6-0, 6-0) in flight three while Chen registered a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Miyuka Kimoto at number two to clinch the match for Duke. The 11th-ranked Beck rallied from an early deficit in the first set to take down Kanapatskaya in straight sets (6-4, 6-2) to make it 5-0.

Coleman and Omirou played out their matches and scored victories in flights four and five. Coleman grinded out a 6-3, 6-2 win against Ito and Omirou fought back from a first-set deficit to takedown Fonte (3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-5) and complete the Sunday sweep for Duke.
