DURHAM – The fifth-ranked Duke women's tennis team increased its win streak to six matches as the Blue Devils handed Boston College a 6-1 defeat on Friday evening at Ambler Tennis Stadium.
Duke (9-1, 5-0 ACC) made quick work of the Eagles and took the opening doubles point in just over 20 minutes of play behind a pair of 6-0 victories. Junior
Chloe Beck and freshman
Ellie Coleman grabbed the first win on court two, while the clinching point came from rookie
Emma Jackson and sophomore
Karolina Berankova in flight three.
"We came out and we were hungry to play," said head coach
Jamie Ashworth. "We're so used to competing and playing. Having a 12-day break in the middle of our season isn't something that happens very often and so we tried to make a luxury out of it – recover and rest and then physically, start to prepare. We have five matches in 10 days, so we wanted to really establish our doubles and that team mentality again having not played for a little bit and I think we did a good job of that."
When play was halted, Boston College's 75th-ranked pairing of Marice Aguiar/Laura Lopez led Blue Devil senior
Margaryta Bilokin and graduate student
Eliza Omirou, 4-2, on court one.
The fifth-ranked Blue Devils carried their strong play into singles as the first set on all six courts went the way of the home team. Bilokin and No. 9 Beck quickly extended the Duke lead to 3-0 after dispatching their opposition in flight five (6-0, 6-1) and flight two (6-1, 6-1). No. 23
Georgia Drummy clinched the match at the top slot with a 6-1, 6-3 takedown of Marice Aguiar.
"When you win a doubles point convincingly like that it's important to get off to a good start in singles and not let the other team linger around and feel like they can gain any type of confidence, and I thought we did a good with that," Ashworth added. "I told them after the match that we looked down and we [had] won the first game on all six courts after winning the doubles and that kind set the tone for the singles the rest of the way."
Duke secured two more victories to close out the match. Senior
Kelly Chen registered a 6-0, 6-2 decision on court three while Coleman collected a 6-4, 6-3 win in the sixth spot.
Natasha Irani tallied the lone point of the night for the Eagles (5-5, 2-3 ACC) via a court four triumph (1-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-5)) over No. 84 Jackson.
