INDIANAPOLIS – Duke freshman
Paolo Banchero has been named to the U.S. Basketball Writers Association All-America Second Team, the USBWA announced Thursday.
With selections to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Second Team and both the Associated Press and Sporting News Third Team, Banchero becomes the 33rd Blue Devil (43 selections) to earn consensus second-team All-America status.
The consensus team is officially recognized by the NCAA to include the Sporting News, NABC, AP and USBWA honors. Under head coach
Mike Krzyzewski, 24 Duke players have been named consensus All-Americans for a combined 31 selections.
Banchero leads all power conference true freshmen in field goal percentage (.474) while ranking second in scoring (17.0), rebounding (7.8) and double-doubles (10). He has scored 20+ points in 13 contests, the third-most by an ACC player and tied for the most among true freshmen nationally. The ACC Freshman of the Year enters the NCAA Tournament averaging 18.8 points, 5.5 boards and 4.8 assists on .537 shooting over his last six games.
At last week's ACC Tournament in Brooklyn, N.Y, Banchero posted consecutive double-doubles as well as a 20-point performance in the title game to earn All-Tournament First Team honors. He is also on the Wooden Award National Ballot and is a finalist for the Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Award.
The USBWA has named a men's All-America Team since its inaugural season of 1956-57. The All-America Team is selected by the USBWA board after voting from the entire membership and the honor is based on performance during the regular season and conference tournaments.
Duke (28-6) opens NCAA Tournament play on Friday when it faces Cal State Fullerton at Bons Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville, S.C. The No. 2-seeded Blue Devils take on the No. 15-seed Titans at 7 p.m. on CBS.
