Day-Wilson Selected ACC Freshman of the Week for Third Time

GREENSBORO, N.C. — For the third time this season, Duke women's basketball rookie Shayeann Day-Wilson has been selected ACC Freshman of the Week, after averaging 16.3 points, 3.7 assists, 3.3 rebounds and 1.3 steals for the Blue Devils.
Day-Wilson, a product of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, helped lead the Blue Devils to a 2-1 league mark on the week, including back-to-back wins against Wake Forest and Pitt. Â
With Day-Wilson being honored three times this season, she became just the seventh Blue Devil to earn the honor three or more times – Elizabeth Williams (9), Alana Beard (7), Monique Currie (5), Azura Stevens (4), Alexis Jones (3), Wanisha Smith (3) and Payton Black (3).
On Sunday against Wake Forest, Day-Wilson had 22 points, five rebounds, two assists and one steal in a win against the Demon Deacons. The 5-5 point guard had only one turnover in 33 minutes of action, while hitting 7-of-14 field goals and 3-of-5 from downtown. Day-Wilson scored 11 points in the third quarter to help propel the Blue Devils to the win.
She opened the week with a team-high 17 points, three rebounds and three assists in a loss to 12th-ranked Georgia Tech, then followed with 10 points, six assists, two rebounds and three steals on the road at Pitt in 28 minutes. Â
For the week, Day-Wilson hit 7-of-14 from 3-point land and 8-of-11 from the free throw line. Â
Day-Wilson is one of only four freshmen nationally to average over 13.0 points and 2.5 assists, including the only rookie among Power Five Conferences. She has collected double-digit scoring in 10 straight games and totaled 20+ points on three different occasions. Â
Delicia Washington of Clemson and Kianna Smith of Louisville were tabbed ACC Co-Player of the Week.
Duke will return to action Thursday, Feb. 10 as the Blue Devils host Florida State at 7 p.m., live on ACC Network Extra. Â
