CHICAGO – Duke women's soccer juniors
Ruthie Jones and
Sophie Jones have been named to the U.S. Under-23 Women's Youth National Team roster for the Thorns Spring Invitational, which is set to be played March 5-11 in Portland, Ore.
The U.S. will play three teams from the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) in the event, beginning with a contest versus the Chicago Red Stars on Saturday, March 5 at 5:30 p.m. ET. It will then take on the Portland Thorns FC on Tuesday, March 8 at 10:30 p.m. ET, before wrapping up the friendly competition against OL Reign on Friday, March 11 at 8 p.m. ET. Each match will take place at Providence Park, home of the Thorns.
A first-team All-ACC pick this past season,
Ruthie Jones solidified herself as one of the nation's top goalkeepers. The Charlotte N.C., native recorded 46 saves with a .793 save percentage while allowing just 12 goals for an ACC-best 0.59 goals against average. She registered nine complete-game shutouts, including four against ranked opponents, tying for the most in the conference. Jones also earned TopDrawerSoccer.com Best XI First Team honors and was a second-team All-Atlantic Region selection by United Soccer Coaches. Prior to coming to Duke in 2019, she was a member of the U.S. Youth National Team pool, helping lead the U-15 squad to a Concacaf championship before making appearances with the U-17 team.
Sophie Jones continued her stellar play in the midfield for Duke this past season, picking up All-ACC and All-Atlantic Region honors for the second straight year. The Menlo Park, Calif., product started all 21 matches and logged 1,569 minutes, including a five-match streak of 90+ minutes played from Sept. 17-Oct. 7. She was named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Best XI Second Team, becoming the third player in program history to garner Best XI recognition twice in her career. Jones has previously trained with the U.S. U-20 Youth National Team and was a member of the Concacaf-winning U-17 team in 2018 that went on to compete in the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup.
The U.S. U-23 roster consists of 22 collegiate players, with 10 representing ACC programs. Duke is one of six programs with multiple student-athletes selected, joining Penn State, Virginia, Florida State, Stanford and USC.
