CHICAGO – U.S. Under-20 Women's Youth National Team head coach Tracey Kevins has selected Duke freshman
Michelle Cooper to the 20-player roster for the 2022 Concacaf U-20 Championship, held Feb. 25-March 12 in the Dominican Republic.
Cooper and the U.S. will take aim at one of three berths to the 2022 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup, which is set for this August in Costa Rica. Looking to claim its record seventh Concacaf U-20 Championship, the team kicks off the tournament on Friday, Feb. 25 versus Nicaragua before taking on Puerto Rico on Sunday, Feb. 27. Group stage wraps up with a clash against host Dominican Republic on Tuesday, March 1.
The roster features 17 student-athletes who recently concluded their collegiate season, including eight representing an ACC program. Cooper has been a part of the U.S. National Team pool since 2016, competing in international tournaments at the U-16, U-17, U-18 and U-19 levels.
A native of Clarkston, Mich., Cooper is coming off a highly decorated freshman season at Duke that saw her earn ACC Freshman of the Year and United Soccer Coaches first-team All-America honors while being named a semifinalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy. She led Duke with 12 goals – the most by a rookie in program history – and 29 points, which ranked fifth in the ACC and fifth among all freshmen nationally. Cooper's 1.61 points per game were good for 23rd nationally and second among freshmen.
The 2022 Concacaf Women's U-20 Championship features 20 teams -- 16 divided into four groups of four, and four who have already advanced to the Round of 16 via pre-tournament qualifying.
The top three finishers in the four groups will advance to the Round of 16 and join the four teams already qualified for the knockout round. From there, the teams will play a single-elimination tournament with the two finalists and third-place game winner qualifying for the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup.
Before heading to the Dominican Republic, the U.S. team will train in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., from Feb. 16-21.
