DURHAM – Duke's junior midfielder
Peter Stroud and sophomore forward
Shakur Mohammed are 2022 MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalists, the United Soccer Coaches and Missouri Athletic Club (MAC) announced on Wednesday. The Blue Devils are one of only two teams (Kentucky) to have multiple players selected to the 15-player list, and the only team in the country to appear on both the men's and women's semifinalists.
Given to the top player in men's and women's NCAA Division I soccer, the MAC Hermann Trophy has been awarded annually since 1967. Stroud and Mohammed are two of 15 semifinalists, with three finalists set to be named on Wednesday, Dec. 14.
With their selection, Duke has now had three semifinalists in the last two seasons, after
Thorleifur Ulfarsson earned the recognition in 2021. The Blue Devils are seeking their first MAC Hermann Trophy winner since
Andrew Wenger in 2011.
Stroud, named to the MAC Hermann Trophy Preseason Watch List and the top player in the country in both TopDrawerSoccer's preseason and midseason Top 100, provided a steady presence in Duke's midfield all season long. The junior earned his second consecutive All-South Region First Team recognition earlier this week and was United Soccer Coaches All-American Third team selection last season. His five assists during the regular season set a new career high and the junior from Chester, N.J., became the first player in ACC history to earn back-to-back ACC Midfielder of the Year recognition while also being named First Team All-ACC. The Chester, N.J., native made his 50th career start in his 51st overall appearance this season against Pittsburgh during the 2022 season.
A native of Kumasi, Ghana, Mohammed scored 10 goals in 2022 to lead the Blue Devils and was second in the country for game-winning goals with six. His 10 goals, and 22 total points, helped Duke finish undefeated in the regular season for the first time since 1999 and vaulted Mohammed from 60th in TopDrawerSoccer's preseason Top 100 to 11th in the midseason iteration. Alongside multiple ACC Offensive Player of the Week recognitions during the season, Mohammed also earned ACC Offensive Player of the Year, First Team All-ACC and First Team All-South Region honors in 2022. The sophomore recorded three multi-goal games, including back-to-back braces against Notre Dame and George Washington in October, and is one of only three sophomores named as a semifinalist.
Duke advanced to the national quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2006 this season and secured its first undefeated regular season since 1999. The Blue Devils reached as high as No. 2 in the country in United Soccer Coaches' weekly top-25 poll and earned a top-16 seed in the NCAA Tournament for the fourth consecutive time.
The 2022 MAC Hermann Trophy banquet will be held at the historic Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis on Jan. 6, 2023 to formally announce this year's winners.
