RALEIGH, N.C. – Senior
Celeste Taylor poured in a season-high 23 points and grabbed eight rebounds to help the Duke women's basketball team take down No. 6 NC State in a thrilling, 72-58, victory Thursday night in front of a sold out, raucous crowd at Reynolds Coliseum.
Taylor shot 50 percent from the field and drilled five of her six treys, also going 4-of-4 at the free throw line. Classmate
Elizabeth Balogun also had a strong performance for the Blue Devils (12-1, 2-0 ACC) as the senior tallied 16 points on 100-percent shooting, to go along with seven boards and three blocks.
Junior
Kennedy Brown and sophomore
Shayeann Day-Wilson each added 10 points apiece to round out the double-figure scoring for Duke. Brown added five rebounds and a pair of blocks to her stat line while Day-Wilson dished out a team-high seven dimes with no turnovers.
NC State (11-2, 1-1 ACC) was led by Saniyah Rivers' 17 points and seven rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The opening 10 minutes was a quarter of runs featuring a pair of ties and three lead changes.
- Following a back-and-forth start to the period, Duke went on a 7-0 run to open up a 10-6 advantage. The Wolfpack responded with seven straight points of their own, however, and held a 13-10 lead after one.
- NC State opened up a nine-point margin (19-10) early in the second period, but the home team's lead wouldn't last for long.
- Duke delivered a monstrous response of its own as the Blue Devils erupted for a 22-2 run over the final 6:16 of the second quarter while holding NC State without a point for the last five minutes to take a 35-23 lead into the half.
- The Blue Devils led by as many as 14 in the third period but a mini run by NC State allowed the home team to chip away at the deficit.
- NC State pulled within single digits at the 3:28 mark before Taylor's fourth triple of the game pushed the Duke lead back to 10. The Wolfpack responded by scoring six of the quarter's final eight points to close the gap to 50-44 at the end of the third.
- The fourth quarter was an exciting one that saw the teams go blow for blow. The Wolfpack threated multiple times as they looked to rally all the way back, but the Blue Devils answered the bell each time to keep the home team at bay.
- Behind a pair of late back-breaking triples from Taylor and Richardson along with a 10-of-10 showing at the charity stripe, including six free throws down the stretch, Duke was able to put the game away and lock down the 72-58 result.
