PORTLAND, Ore. – The eighth-ranked Duke men's basketball team advanced to the Phil Knight Legacy championship game after a 71-64 victory over Xavier on Friday afternoon at Moda Center in Portland, Ore.
Jeremy Roach led three Blue Devils in double-figures with a season-high 21 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Duke held a 7-4 lead at the first media timeout, with all seven points scored by freshman Kyle Filipowski.
- The two teams went back and forth as the first half continued, with the score knotted at 20 apiece at the 7:47 mark.
- Filipowski became the first to double-digits after a pair of free throws put Duke ahead, 31-27.
- The Blue Devils went on a 15-2 run to take a 36-27 lead and force a Xavier timeout with 2:18 remaining in the first half.
- Duke started the second half hot as freshman Mark Mitchell pushed Duke's lead to 13, 49-36, with a three-pointer just over two minutes in.
- The Musketeers drew within four, 51-47, after an 11-2 run.
- Duke had a run of its own thanks to Roach, as the junior eclipsed the 20-point mark with a jumper with 2:45 remaining to extend Duke's lead to 69-62.
- The Blue Devils' defense held Xavier without a made field goal for the final 5:51 of the game to secure the 71-64 victory.
GAME NOTES
- Duke is now 5-0 when playing in Phil Knight events in Portland after winning the inaugural PK80 in 2017.
- Duke out-rebounded Xavier, 33-32, snapping its program-record streak of six consecutive games with a double-digit advantage in rebounding margin.
- Duke held a 12-4 edge in second-chance points. Through seven games, Duke is +88 (127-39) in second-chance scoring.
- Duke has held each of the seven opponents this season to less than 70 points and five to less than 60. The Blue Devils held Xavier to a season-low 64 points – the Musketeers were averaging 85.8 points entering the game.
- Duke held Xavier's leading scorer Jack Nunge to a season-low five points (1-of-13 shooting). Nunge's previous scoring low this season was 14 points vs. Indiana.
- After Duke held Oregon State without a field goal for the final 5:03 of regulation, Xavier did not score in the game's final 5:51.
- Duke is now a combined 93-32 when playing in one of the 12 current NBA arenas, including 5-0 in Portland's Moda Center. The Blue Devils have won 22 of their 27 games at NBA arenas.
- Roach scored a team-high 21 points – his second career 20-point game and his first since his career-high 22 points at Virginia Tech in his freshman season (Jan. 21, 2021).
- Roach had five assists, four rebounds and two steals on 9-of-15 shooting in 35 minutes.
- Filipowski has scored in double-figures in each of his first seven career games, after collecting 12 points against Xavier while also swiping a career-high four steals.
- Mitchell scored 16 points – two shy of his career high – on 6-of-11 shooting with five rebounds.
- Graduate Ryan Young pulled down a game-high five offensive rebounds (six rebounds total) with eight points in 21 minutes off the bench.
