TOLEDO, Ohio – A phenomenal second quarter defensive performance ignited the Duke women's basketball team to a 58-41 road win over Toledo Sunday afternoon in front of a raucous crowd at Savage Arena.
Sophomore
Reigan Richardson led the offensive charge with a game-high 13 points off the bench, while junior
Kennedy Brown posted a near double-double as she grabbed a team-high nine boards to go with 12 points on 6-of-10 shooting. Two more Duke (5-0) players finished close to double figures as well as senior
Celeste Taylor and
Jordyn Oliver chipped in eight points apiece.
Khera Goss and Nan Garcia led Toledo (3-1) with 11 points each.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The opening 10 minutes was tightly contested with three ties and three lead changes. Neither team was able to keep the other at bay as both Duke and Toledo's largest first-quarter lead stood at three.
- Toledo held a slim, 10-8, lead at the media timeout, but the Blue Devils closed the quarter scoring nine of the final 13 points to hold a 17-14 lead at the end of the opening period.
- Duke's defense was suffocating in the second quarter as the team held the Rockets off the scoreboard until the 1:09 mark of the period and 1-of-11 shooting overall.
- Offensively, the Blue Devils took advantage of their matchup in the paint scoring 10 of their 15 points in the paint. At the half, Duke held a 32-15 lead.
- Seven Blue Devils scored in the first half with Richardson and Brown pacing Duke with eight points apiece. Shayeann Day-Wilson also added six points and Elizabeth Balogun tallied four.
- Toledo pulled within 13 early in the third quarter but buckets from Brown, Vanessa de Jesus, Oliver and Richardson pushed the Duke advantage to 23 with just under two minutes left in the third.
- Duke led by as many as 24 in the final quarter, but the Rockets attempted another late rally in the period, slicing the margin by seven. That would be as close as Toledo would get, however, as the Blue Devils closed out the 17-point win.
GAME NOTES:
- Duke improves to 5-0 overall this season and 2-0 in games away from Cameron.
- Two players finished the game in double figures – Richardson (13) and Brown (12)
- Duke held the Rockets to just three points in the second quarter on 1-of-11 shooting from the floor. That second-quarter point total is the third lowest by a Duke opponent all-time, while the field goal percentage ranks as the seventh lowest all-time by a Blue Devil foe.
- The visitors outrebounded Toledo by 20 (41-21), including an 8-3 advantage on the offensive glass.
- The Blue Devils scored 22 points off 12 Toledo turnovers while limiting the Rockets to just two points off Duke turnovers.
- Duke doubled Toledo's point production in the paint (36-18), held a 7-0 advantage in blocked shots and outscored the home team on second-chance opportunities (11-0), off the bench (24-15) and on the fastbreak (12-6).
