Duke Continues Time at ITA Carolina Regional

CARY, N.C. – Senior Andrew Zhang advanced to Sunday's round of 16 at the 2022 ITA Carolina Regional Championship at Cary Tennis Park.
Duke's doubles pairs of Michael Heller and Zhang as well as Garrett Johns and Pedro Rodenas also remain alive after winning two matches Saturday during the openings rounds of doubles play.
Zhang defeated No. 17-32 Matthew Thomson of Wake Forest 7-5, 6-2 before teaming up with Heller for consecutive wins in doubles action. The duo bested Clemson's Jorge Plans Gonzalez and Maxwell Smith 6-4, 6-2 to kick off their doubles tournament. They then registered a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Coastal Carolina's Steve Mundt and Carols Berna Ruiz to advance to the round of 16.
Johns and Rodenas also saw wins on Saturday. The twosome outlasted Coastal Carolina's Lucas Wayenburg and Neil O'Connor 2-6, 6-2, 10-7 before besting Reece Falck and Bekhzod Rasamatov of UNC Wilmington 6-3, 6-4.
Singles main draw action gets underway at 9 a.m., Sunday morning. The championship quarterfinals are slated to begin at 12 (noon). Doubles play in the round of 16 will commence at 3 p.m.
