DURHAM – Duke men's tennis heads to Columbia, S.C., for the ITA Kickoff Weekend at South Carolina's new Carolina Indoor Tennis Center.

The Blue Devils will join Liberty, LSU and host No. 13 South Carolina at the event. Duke, the No. 2 seed at the tournament, will face off against the No. 3 seed in Liberty on Saturday at 2 p.m. The winner of that match will meet either No. 1 seed and 13th-ranked South Carolina or No. 4 seed LSU, who play the first match of the day on Saturday at 11 a.m.

The losers of those two matches will meet in a consolation match on Sunday at 11 a.m., with the championship match is set for 2 p.m. Fans will be required to wear masks while inside the building in accordance with the University of South Carolina's policy.Â

In total, there are 15 host sites across the country, with four teams competing at each site. The winner at each site will advance to the ITA National Team Indoor Championship, held Feb. 18-21 in Seattle, Wash. The University of Washington will automatically be in the 16-team field as the host site school.

Duke has two singles players and two doubles pairs ranked heading into the matches – sophomore Faris Khan and junior Garrett Johns come in at No. 38 and No. 76, respectively, in singles play, while Johns and Sean Sculley and Michael Heller and Andrew Zhang are ranked in doubles action at No. 37 and No. 39, respectively.

Saturday's contest with the Flames will be the second all-time meeting. The Blue Devils won the only other meeting in the series, 5-2, just a season ago.

Liberty has begun the 2022 spring season with a 1-1 mark after matches with No. 7 Virginia and William & Mary. The Flame swept William & Mary, 7-0, during their last outing on Wednesday. Liberty is the defending ASUN Conference champions and were picked to finish first in the league in the 2022 ASUN Men's Tennis Preseason Coaches Poll.

Duke currently leads the all-time series with the Gamecocks, 28-18, including a matchup in last year's ITA Kickoff Weekend. South Carolina claimed that match 4-1, but prior to that the Blue Devils had won four consecutive meetings. Duke has recorded eight wins over its last 11 matches with the Gamecocks.

LSU went 2-0 during its opening weekend against Incarnate Wood with 5-2 and 6-1 victories. Gabriel Diaz Freire leads the team with a single record of 7-5, followed closely by Vlad Lobak with a record of 5-6. The pair also team up in doubles action and are the No. 45 ranked duo in the country.
