DURHAM – Duke men's tennis is set to open its home slate on Sunday with a doubleheader against Elon and North Carolina Central at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center.

Ramsey Smith took over the program, Duke holds a 11-2 record in its home-opening matches. The Blue Devils' two losses were to Elon in 2014 and No. 12 Illinois in 2018.

HISTORY WITH ELON
Sunday's contest is the 16th all-time meeting between the two programs with Duke having won 14 of the previous 15 contests. The Blue Devils are riding a four-match winning streak over the Phoenix, including a 6-1 defeat during the teams' last meeting on Jan. 20, 2020.

SCOUTING THE PHOENIX
Elon opened its spring season last weekend at No. 10 Wake Forest. The Phoenix dropped the match 7-0. Nicholas Condos put up a fight against No. 100 ranked Taha Baadi, but came up short 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 in the No. 3 singles slot. Chung-Han Tsai went up against No.75 Filippo Moroni on the No. 4 singles court, but was edged 7-5, 6-1. Esteban Penagos also played against a ranked opponent in No. 117 Robert Maciag, but was defeated 7(7)-6(2), 6-3 in No. 6 singles. Nicholas Campbell won the second set of his singles match against Rrezart Cungu in No. 2 singles, but fell in three sets 6(3)-7(7), 6-3, 6-0.

HISTORY WITH NORTH CAROLINA CENTRAL
Duke currently leads the all-time series with the Eagles 16-0 with all of the matches being played on the Blue Devils' campus. The last time these two programs met was Feb. 9, 2020, in which Duke blanked the Eagles, 7-0.

SCOUTING THE EAGLES
North Carolina Central returns four of its five student-athletes from a year ago. The Eagles dropped their opening match of the year at UNC Greensboro, 7-0, on Friday afternoon.

No food or beverages will be allowed in Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center. This is consistent with the university's current policy on indoor dining across the campus to reduce the risk of COVID transmission during the current surge of the Omicron variant.

The Blue Devils hit the road next weekend for the ITA Kickoff Weekend in Columbia, S.C. Duke is scheduled to play Liberty on Friday, Jan. 29 at 2 p.m. before facing off against either South Carolina or LSU on Sunday. The start time for Sunday's match has yet to be determined. All matches will be played at the Carolina Indoor Tennis Center.
