RALEIGH, N.C. – Two players registered double-figure scoring efforts, but the 16th-ranked Duke women's basketball team fell to No. 4 NC State, 84-60, Sunday afternoon at Reynolds Coliseum.
Freshman
Shayeann Day-Wilson paced the Blue Devils (11-4, 2-3) with 14 points and team high four assists, while senior
Miela Goodchild added a dozen points, three rebounds and two assists. Senior
Onome Akinbode-James pulled down nine rebounds to lead the Duke efforts on the glass.
Duke got off to a slow start in the first quarter. Akinbode-James tallied the first four points for the Blue Devils, but Duke was just 1-for-10 from the floor and had four turnovers through the first seven minutes of the opening stanza. Graduate student
Lexi Gordon drained a triple from the left wing to snap a four minute scoring drought and senior
Elizabeth Balogun followed with a layup off a nice cut on Day-Wilson's assist. Neither team tallied a basket over the final two minutes and the home team held a 19-9 lead at the end of 10 minutes.

Jade Williams, Goodchild, Gordon and Day-Wilson combined for all 13 of the Blue Devils' points in the second. Williams scored inside off a feed from sophomore
Vanessa de Jesus then Goodchild and Gordon drilled back-to-back trifectas. Day-Wilson tallied the last five points of the period, including a three-pointer just before the halftime buzzer to pull Duke within 42-22 at the break.
Gordon led the charge with six first-half points, Day-Wilson added five points and four assists, while Akinbode-James chipped in four points and grabbed six rebounds. Duke shot just 28 percent from the field and had 11 turnovers through the first 20 minutes of play.
Duke emerged from the locker room looking to chip away at the NC State apex and outscored the Wolfpack 13-8 over the first 5:15 of the third. Balogun netted the first five points for the Blue Devils, sinking a triple before converting on a hard drive to the rim. Shortly after, Day-Wilson and Goodchild cashed in from distance and Williams added her second basket of the paint. de Jesus added a trey then Gordon and Balogun combined to go 3-of-4 from the charity stripe to help the Blue Devils complete the third outscoring NC State (19-18). However, the home team still maintained a 19-point margin heading into the final period.
Day-Wilson and Goodchild added six more to their respective totals in the fourth and combined for a dozen of Duke's 19 points. Williams, de Jesus and senior
Imani Lewis also scored for the Blue Devils.
Elisa Cunnane led NC State (16-2, 7-0) with 23 points and six rebounds.

- Lexi Gordon made her return to the court after missing the Virginia Tech contest due to Duke's health & safety protocols.
- Miela Goodchild finished with double digit points for the fourth straight contest and fifth time in the last six games.
- Celeste Taylor missed her second straight contest with an injury, after getting hurt at Syracuse on Jan. 9.
